Samhain

From History:

Samhain is a pagan religious festival originating from an ancient Celtic spiritual tradition. In modern times, Samhain (a Gaelic word pronounced “sow-win”) is usually celebrated from October 31 to November 1 to welcome in the harvest and usher in “the dark half of the year.” Celebrants believe that the barriers between the physical world and the spirit world break down during Samhain, allowing more interaction between humans and denizens of the Otherworld.

The Gamblers Fallacy – Believing that “runs” occur to statistically independent phenomena, such as a roulette wheel spins.
I had an advanced statistics professor in college who delighted in giving gambling examples for statistics problems. He would use black jack, or dice or roulette. He would come up with a data set and ask us to analyze it to see if any statistical significance could be gleaned from it. And eventually calculate the odds. (The odds actually had no significance to the class. He just enjoyed it.)
This was back in the 1980’s before there were any decent statistical modelling computer programs. You could program in SAS. They taught it to us even though they knew spreadsheets were just about to blow it’s usefulness out of the water. But it was incredibly labor intensive and usually filled with errors. You often spent more time proofing errors than analyzing the data.

What is random?

Random is the term used to describe that 2 events have absolutely no correlation. You roll a six sided die once. You have an equal chance of the number coming up 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6.  If you roll it a second time, the chance is still equal. People start to get confused because they will think that if you roll a “1” on the first roll, that the chances that you will get another “1” is somehow less. It is not.
You can change the question however. If you were to ask, “If you roll the die twice, what is the chance (probability) that you will roll a “1” on both rolls?” This is a wholly different question. With a whole different set of probabilities than the first question.
But it is similar enough, that a crafty wordsmith to use the argument to their advantage.
Also know that we are also dealing with other possibilities when you face multiple trials interacting with multiple variables. Then you can start working with Game Theory and Chaos Theory. Statistics is the study of large numbers and amounts of things – somehow being able to describe and make sense of these large numbers.
I believe the sames Stats teacher who had this obsession also would often note that, “The Lottery is Taxation for People Who Failed Math.”
What we must remember with the Gambler’s Fallacy is that numbers and statistics are often used to make points during discussion and discourse. And when they can find favorable statistics, they will be used to make points that may not be valid. We must pay attention.

More Fallacious Content

If you caught yesterday’s post, I began a discussion about Logical Fallacies. It was inspired by a meme I found on Facebook. It listed a number of “logical fallacies” that are used. It both defined them and suggested how to counter attack them. The meme is pictured to the right.

I will continue discussing each fallacy and offering thoughts and examples when it makes sense.

Special Pleading – Moving the goalposts of making up exceptions when a claim is shown to be false.

My favorite example of this is Global Warming. Here is a case of a seriously Inconvenient Truth. From the 70’s through the first 10 years of the new millennium, the main argument of the environmental lobby was that greenhouse gasses (caused by the burning of fossil fuels) was going to cause the Earth to turn into a massive greenhouse, thus increasing the global temperature, causing the ice caps to melt, flooding all of the coastlines of the world and causing global catastrophes.

For the environmentalists, it was the perfect story. ALL “science” textbooks were written to reflect this belief. “Science” academic-types have their entire careers as well as all of their grant funding tied to it. Former Vice President Al Gore wrote and produced a movie promoting this concept (who cares that he made over $250 Million from it). And then “98% of all scientists everywhere” somehow agreed to it.

Then, the Inconvenient Truth came out. According to Gore, New York City should have been under about 30 feet of ocean water by about 2015 (probably earlier than that. I never actually sat through the whole movie, but read enough about it.). The Earth was NOT warming up. The Polar Ice Caps were not being melted by Global Warming.

By the early 2010’s, the Environmentalists had to come up with a new name for their cause. It is now called

CLIMATE CHANGE

The Science is Always Changing. Same BS. New Name. Voila. All the grants secured by liberal science academia are saved. All that being said, Joe Biden still has the words “Global Warming” written into all of his speeches and talking points. It was a very easy message to spread no matter how wrong it was.

the “Special Pleading” fallacy allowed one side of the argument to basically excuse themselves from being wrong by claiming that the Science changed. New Name. Same modus operendi.

It is illogical because it has given them a free pass to say whatever they want. Academia, “Scientists”, The media, all of the textbooks agree. Anyone questioning it is called stupid.

Take the first Presidential Debate. Did Chris Wallace ask, “What are you doing to clean up the environment?” to president Trump? No. He asked, “What do you believe about Climate Change?”

And as The Guardian said in their discussion about this question,

Science unequivocally shows humans are the predominant cause of global warming.

But in 2020, actual science says quite the opposite. Pollution is bad. But it is not the cause of the Earth’s Climate changing. But they still say it.

What is a logical fallacy?

Let me start by saying that I found this infographic on Facebook. I decided it needed to be spread far and wide. But the descriptions may just need a little more work – maybe a story or two.

And frankly, this was probably the most extensive listing of these fallacies that I have found. So here I go.

Logical fallacies are when false reasoning is used to make a point. Like saying 1 + 1 = 3 – because there are 3 figures before the equal sign. You read this piece of false bullshit and immediately say, that the person saying it is an idiot. But s I googled it, there are a number of mathematical proofs that can be used. They make massive assumptions that are not in the equation to justify themselves. but in the end, it is like chasing down a rabbit hole of someone else’s thought stream.

Logical fallacies are like tricks or illusions of thought. They are used by politicians, religious leaders, the media or other people to fool or influence people.

I am hypersensitive to these right now. It’s a week away from an extremely contentious election in the United States. I have heard so much bullshit and mud slung around, I think we could all use a little logical boost.

And what is worse, these people do not use just one piece of faulty logic. More often, they strew lines of bullshit with SO MANY fallacies that you do not know where to begin to dissect it.

So I would like to shed some light on them and kind of flush them out.

So with that, I am going to go through each of these over the next few days. Couple a day. And explore them. Consider who uses them. Find examples.

Strawman: Misrepresenting or exaggerating someone’s argument to make it easier to attack. And using that exaggeration against the person

This is a big one in politics today. In fact I like to dissect every political commercial that airs to find these. And both sides use it equally. The fact that the Democrats have been outspending republicans about 5-1 in Southeast Pennsylvania means that I have heard pretty much every policy related smear there is. They tend to go like this:

1 – My opponent voted for this or that piece of legislation.

2 – The world is going to end and we will all die because of it.

3 – My opponent is an evil messenger spawn of the Devil.

4 – Vote for me. I will not make that mistake and kill us all.

Slippery SlopeIf A happens, then Z will happen too and therefore we must stop A from happening.

You find this fallacy is often used together with other logical fallacies (like the Strawman). It is pretty simple. A small thing happens. It sets off a chain reaction of worsening events. Until either everyone is dead, or the hero somehow saves them.

This is a difficult fallacy to overcome as it makes assumptions and then follows them toward what it considers a logical conclusion. BUT the question must be made about the ASSUMPTIONS! This is often where the slippery slope can be diverted.

These are a start. I will keep going tomorrow!

Happy Monday! Think of all the beauty around you and be happy!

My Monday message for today is not my own. But I cannot source it as a direct quote because I changed it.

The message came from Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl whose life was interrupted by the Holocaust. Her family hid in an attic for about 2 years. The Diary was found after the family was discovered taken to a concentration camp, where she died.

I remember reading the Diary of Anne Frank when I was in the 5th Grade. It was one of those books that all 5th graders had to read. Thanks to my brother who preceded me in school by a year, I dreaded the experience. He was not a fan of the story.

So for me, I had to wonder whether it was so bad. What I remember. . . Claustrophobia. I suffer greatly from it. the idea of being shut up in a small apartment with a lot of people having to be super quiet and still all the time without a lot of light really bothered me. I remember her talking about how irritated she was with everyone she was with. But that is about it.

And I remember it kind of not ending. We did not get a big explanation about what happened to her after they were discovered.

Still Left

As I noted,  I altered Anne Frank’s quote. It is part of my attempt to make my weekly message completely positive. Anne’s quote was “Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy.” And this quote, to me felt desperate. It was a desperation due to outside circumstances. They were living in a country where their religion could get them killed. The Nazi’s were hell bent on extermination of the Jews. And despite this, Anne Frank could see hope. But that hope was fleeting, as shown in the “still left.”

Where Happy Monday and The Law of Attraction Meet

When I began offering the Happy Monday messages, the intention I made and have stuck to, was to always post a completely positive statement to begin the week. I thought this would be a pretty easy thing to do. It seems that there are always positive quotes and advice that people are sharing.

However, this is often not the case. For example. Sometimes what might seem like a positive statement is held together by more negative statements.

Never let your circumstances hold you back from your dreams.

While this seems like a positive statement about following your dreams, it is not. Never is negative. Hold you back is negative.

I found this far too often when searching for a positive statement. And as you start paying attention, you will also notice it.

So I needed to amend this Anne Frank statement just slightly to accommodate for a completely positive thought. No conditions. No dark side.

You Are What You Think

A primary tenant of the Law of Attraction is that you are what you think. All thoughts are things. Therefore if you are thinking negative, you are attracting negative. Or, if you are thinking of things that you do not want, you are more likely to attract them, rather than what you do want.

It was pondering on this idea that I began Happy Monday as well as my previous blog, BrighterSideNow. That blog was, for me, a writing project. Or more specifically  a writing challenge. In it, I did not allow myself to write anything in the Negative. (had I been writing on BSN, that sentence would have to be written as “I required myself to write everything positive.”)

For the 4 years I wrote that blog, I explored instances of positivity vs negativity  in all aspects of life. Music, politics, entertainment, sports, religion. And frankly, you would be shocked at how few instances of true positivity you can find.

From the Desk of Albert Einstein

The Law of Attraction is one of those subjects that involves a lot of controversy. It touches on the realm of spirituality that people in science fear to tread. And they fear it because they can neither explain it or prove it.

And I would like to part this discussion with a couple very similar quotes by Albert Einstein. He was well known to question this realm.

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

“No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.”

These two quotes are attributed to him, though I could never source a time or event or publication where he said them. but he was known to believe that his thoughts and ideas came from outside of himself. That he would consider a subject, think about it long and hard, and then throw it out into the ether to see what came back.

If you have made it to the end of this, I would ask you to do the same. Is there a problem or issue that you have that you do not have a solution to.

Throw it out into the ether. See what comes back.
