Another Amusing Article
This morning I came across another interesting article in the 1440 newsletter. 1440 is a supposed non-biased newsletter. I sometimes find amusing information in it. Like this story:
From the 1440 Newsletter 6/11/2026

We Are Not Ambiturners
Humans consistently show a preference toward moving counterclockwise, a study published yesterday reveals. The phenomenon is not yet understood but holds true across variations in environment, age, gender, culture, and handedness.
The inclination was first observed during the COVID-19 pandemic, when researchers in Spain considered how to maintain social distancing in crowds. In 32 out of 33 experiments, pedestrians ended up veering left and moving counterclockwise. Since most animals walk without directional preference (exceptions include temnothorax ants), researchers were puzzled. They conducted further experiments in Spain and Japan, corroborating the findings, including with teenagers, toddlers, and adults in various settings and crowd sizes. That preference was especially pronounced in a nursery school, suggesting the phenomenon may have biological roots.
Researchers hope to conduct further studies in virtual reality spaces. The findings could help inform how airports, malls, and other public spaces are designed. (How do crowd engineers do it? See considerations, via YouTube.)
Makes you ask. Why do clock turn clockwise? and Why could this phenomenon of a preference toward counterclockwiseness exist?
Actually, the answer is pretty easy. And the fact that the 1440 article does not even allude to it baffles me.
Clockwise
Per Wikipedia:
Clocks turn clockwise because early mechanical timekeepers were modeled after sundials. In the Northern Hemisphere, where modern clocks were popularized, the sun moves across the southern sky, causing a sundial’s shadow to trace a left-to-right arc—the motion we now call “clockwise”.
So we have the entire idea of “Clockwise” turning to the right the idea of “that’s just the way they always did it in the industrial world.
This reminds me of a story popularized by motivational speaker Earl Nightengale back in the 1960’s.
An industrialist stops by a jeweler’s window every day to set his watch, which he uses to blow the factory whistle at 5:00 PM. He learns the jeweler sets his shop clock to that exact whistle, revealing neither actually knew the true time.
So – Why the Preference for “Counterclockwise”?
This was the easy part (at least for me). I study this stuff every day. You can kind of see it in the graphic above showing the path of the sun across the sky. BY the graphic, it moves clockwise. And this is because the earth spins counterclockwise. Note that also:
- The Moon revolves around the Earth counterclockwise.
- The Earth Revolves around the Sun counterclockwise.
- The Sun rotates Counterclockwise.
We live in an ambient environment that spins to the left rather than the right. So, it is natural that the “researchers” from the 1440 article found this to be true. What is shocking is that these “researchers” (or the 1440 reporter who posted this article) have not considered the macro forces of rotation and revolution in the leftward direction in their “research”. Shocking? Or just Funny?
They could learn a thing or two from an astrologer.
A Piece of Advice

All of this story, while amusing, also brings up an important point in the whole world of prepping for disaster. Our reality is hyper aware or the passage of time. Our lives revolve (heehee) around the time of day. When we wake. When we sleep. When we eat. When we go to work. When we take lunch break. You get the idea.
Where will we be when the Shit hits the Fan and there are no clocks? If all electric goes, no phones. No digital clocks. If there is an EMP, all electronics will be fried. Consider shat you may need.
EMP proof watches mean a winding mechanism. Battery operated may not cut it.
Can you personally tell time by the sun? Might you need a sundial to carry around? Something to think about and prepare for.
