Join Laura Walker and Andrew Foss as we discuss the Lunar cycle and the affects on the Moon Phases on our lives.
NEW MOON: begin, initiate, wish, project, set an intention
At the time of the New Moon, we mark it at 0 degrees. The Moon moves across the sky at a rate of about .5 degrees per hour – or about 12 degrees per day. We split that into the eight phases of the moon, each with its own energetic signature.
At the time of the New Moon, the Moon is located directly in between the Sun and the Earth. You might ask, :Then why do we not have an eclipse every month at the New Moon?” I will get into this question another time. But it has to do with the orbital plane of the Moon being different than that of the Earth to the sun. 2 times per year, they meet (at the Spring and Autumn Equinox) and can potentially offer us an eclipse.
The Moon does not generate any light itself. The bright moon is caused by the light of the Sun reflecting off its surface. So we can only see brightness on the side of the Moon that faces the sun. When the Moon is stationed in between, we see nothing but darkness.
Astrologically, it is said that the energy of the Moon is at its lowest point. It is the starting point of the lunar cycle.
For the Leo Cycle, this happened at 11:11 PM on July 31. The Moon and Earth were at 8 degrees 37 minutes of Leo. We round up to 9 degrees to get the Sabian Symbol that will describe the energy activated – “glass blowers shape beautiful vases with their controlled breathing”
REMEMBER THE SCRAMBLER
If you remember the analogy of the Scrambler – Carnival Ride, This is the point where you feel like you are suspended in air. The torque is ab out to take hold. You are about to accelerate. But it has not started.
Since it is the beginning, it is said that it is a good time for us to set intentions for the Lunar Month.
Kind of like New Years resolutions, you can follow the same type of plans each month by setting intentions. These may not need to be as long ranging (Like quitting cigarettes or losing 50 lbs). This is the time to start. The energy is ramping up and you will be in prime position to launch whatever your intention. It will be supported by the increasing energy of the Moon; you will be as if surfing the lunar cycle.
The day of the New Moon is a quiet time to pause and rest in nature. As it is good complete the old before starting something new, the last few days before the New Moon are good for getting rid of things you don’t want to have any more in your life, like bad habits.
Also, your body may not be able to recuperate or heal as well or as quickly around the New Moon. This should be taken into account when planning a surgery.
Similarly, the New Moon can mark a low point in the emotional life, so people who are prone to depression should be careful about the surrounding emotional atmosphere on these days.
Born Under the New Moon
Do you know what phase the moon was in when you were born. This is not a common piece of astrology that is looked at. In my opinion, one that is not given the importance it deserves. After discovering my own, I was able to see its influence over my life. I may talk more about that when we get to the disseminating phase (HINT HINT).
If you do not know it, it is simple to find. Go to a search engine. Search:
“Lunar Phase at Birth”
There are many sites that will give you this information. I will outline the basic lunar phase astrology for each phase in upcoming posts. But for now, we are starting
New Moon – Low Energy Phase
- In tune with what they want
- Try new things with Childlike wonder and innocence
- It is a loving energy
- Drawn to try new things and follow trends
- They are Creative idea people
- Aggressively go after what they want
- Always a shiny new idea on the horizon
- Dog like enthusiasm – like a large labrador chasing things around
- Energy can bee fleeting
- Fizzles out before its done
- Dog like enthusiasm like ADHD – jumping to the next shiny object they see and forgetting what they were aggressively attacking moments before
- Cloaked in a darkness around themselves – Unable to see how they are from an outside perspective.
How New Moon people can Relate to the other phases.
- Low Energy phases are good – Including Balsamic, New and Crescent – This is when mind and heart are in alignment
- High energy Phases are more Difficult – Gibbous, Full and Disseminating
- Full Moon is a time to look inward and focus on personal reflection. The energy at full moon is the full expression of the energy exposed at the New Moon. It is more intense though.
- Quarter Phases use to evaluate self.

I am completely lifting an article from another site (Time and Date.com) due to its relevance to now and the irony about it. I did get rid of all of its internal links – and recommend that if you are interested, please visit them. Time and Date is a very useful site. I use it often as a reference.
Much of Astrological information is plagued by misnomers. One person will name something and something else similar will take its place. So it is with the subject of The Black Moon. If you know anything about The Oracle Report, you have heard of The Black Moon (also referred to at Black moon Lilith and other such names).
THIS ARTICLE talks more about a nickname for a specific moon phase that does not happen very often. You may have hear of a “Blue Moon” or “The Harvest Moon”. This specific usage is in that vein, and I wanted to draw attention to it.
When Is the next Black Moon?
There are several definitions of a Black Moon. It can be the third New Moon in an astronomical season with four New Moons or the second New Moon in the same calendar month.
Black Moon is not a well known astronomical term. In recent years, the term has been made popular by social media, astrologers, and followers of the Wiccan religion.
No Single Definition
There is no single accepted definition of a Black Moon. The term has been commonly used to refer to any of the following phenomena associated with the New Moon:
- Second New Moon in the same month: These Black Moons are the most common ones, and they occur about once every 29 months. Because of time zone differences, the month they happen in can vary, like the Black Moon in July 2019 (US) or August 2019 (UK).
- Third New Moon in a season of four New Moons: These Black Moons are a little rarer, and occur about once every 33 months. We divide a year into four seasons – spring, summer, fall (autumn), and winter. Usually, each season has three months and three New Moons. When a season has four New Moons, the third New Moon is called a Black Moon. This is the exact counterpart to the original definition of a Blue Moon, except that Blue Moons are Full Moons.
- No New Moon in February: About once every 19 years, there is no New Moon in February. This can only happen in February, as this is the only month which is shorter than a lunar month (lunation). When this occurs, both January and March have two New Moons, instead of just one, which is the norm. The next Black Moon by this definition will occur in 2033, while the last one was in 2014. Because of time zone differences, these Black Moons may not happen all over the world. For instance, there is a Black Moon in the most western parts of the US in February 2022, but not in Europe or Australia.
- No Full Moon in February: About once every 19 years, February does not have a Full Moon. Instead, there are two Full Moons in January and March, also known as a double Blue Moon. The next Black Moon by this definition will occur in 2037, while the last one was in 2018. Because of time zone differences, these Black Moons may not happen all over the world.
Invisible New Moon
New Moon is the Moon phase we cannot see at all from Earth, as only the far side of the Moon is illuminated.
However, 2–5 times a year, the New Moon comes between Earth and the Sun, causing a solar eclipse. The New Moon, or at least a part of it, is then visible as a silhouette in front of the Sun.
Significant in Pagan Culture
Black Moons hold special significance to people who practice certain forms of Pagan religions and who believe certain actions become more potent when performed on the night of a Black Moon.
Much of understanding Astrology and the world around us is about paying attention. And a great place to start paying attention is by watching the lunar phases.
Astrology tells us about the energy that we are experiencing from outside of our home here on Gaia Earth. This includes all of the planets and entities in our solar system, including: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto to name the ones that are generally known and talked about in the Mainstream.
When you leave the mainstream, you also contend with Asteroids (Chiron, Juno, Athena to name a few) , The Black Moon and Eris to name a few.
Each of these entities energy fields has an effect upon the Earth. Its Magnetic. Its Gravitational. Its energetic. We feel it sometimes. And often ignore it in the background. And the point of studying Astrology is to Pay Attention to them and be ready for the energy as it is in effect. Your knowledge of it, as well as how to deal with it, is your defense.
Start with The Moon
I begin this study of Astrology focusing on the moon. I listed it as one of the major influences in our solar system mostly as its proximity to us. It is the closest object to us in the solar system. It is by no means the largest. This illustration shows, starting with Earth as the largest, the size of some of the other items in our solar system. Since the Moon is so close, it affects us more than any other entity, other than the Sun.
Let’s put it another way, for people who like numbers:
Circumference of Moon – 6,786 Miles
Circumference of Earth – 24,900 Miles
Distance Earth to Moon – 238,900 Miles
Distance Earth to Sun – 91 Million Miles (1 AU)
THE LUNAR PHASES
I have been on a quest to follow more of the natural phases and cycles rather than the man-made cycles. I have felt for a long time that the standard Gregorian Calendar does a terrible job of this. If you are lucky you will find a calendar that has many of these marked. More likely, you have to do it yourself.
I have found many calendars that show basic Lunar phases (usually Full Moon and New Moon). But little else.
A couple years ago I began paying attention to each of the lunar phases and paying attention to how I felt. I had
been following this through Oracle Report for years. Until I began tracking them personally, it was pretty hit and
miss. I would notice at the New Moon and try to keep track. But often lost focus and interest.
When I started watching the dates and the changes, all became different. Paying attention to the energy helped it
to make sense.
Just the Facts
There is much that needs to be understood about the Lunar Cycle. The physics can be confusing. So I will step us through it.
- The Earth revolves in a circle once every 24 hours. We call it a day.
- The Moon rotates around the Earth every 29 odd days
- The Moon also revolves. just much slower. It revolves once every 29 odd days.
- A circle is 360 degrees
- A Lunar Cycle is counted from New Moon to New Moon
- This is more than 360 degrees
The illustration to the left shows this oddity and may help you to understand it better. Since the earth is moving in its path around the sun, when the moon makes its 29 day circuit, the earth has moved in relation to the sun. Therefore it gets to 360 degrees of rotation, it is not yet New Moon again.
The Moon’s revolution is in sync with its rotation. From our perspective, it is locked. We always view the same side of the moon. You have heard the term “the Dark Side of the moon.” Pink Floyd not withstanding, The Dark side is actually whichever side is not facing the sun. We usually think of it as the side of the moon that we never see.
We however see a constantly changing view of the moon. I found this picture somewhere online and thought it was hilarious. It reminds me of Bazooka Bubble Gum. How cute. Some cigarette company put cool collectible cards in their packs. Now who do you thing they were marketing to?
All jokes aside, it is a cool picture and offers a good example of how we see the moon.
More Physics – Motion
Now you ask, why would there be any difference here as a result of the moon moving around us? I have a pretty good visual to consider that may help you understand the characterizations that we will explain later about the energy at each phase.
Have you ever been to a carnival or amusement park and ridden The Scrambler? It is a common ride. I think it is called the scrambler because after you have ridden on it, the experience can be compared to the way an egg might feel after being scrambled.
I like the comparison because it shows what happens when multiple forces come to bear on a single spot. You sit in a car. The car is one of 3 or 4 that rotates on a single axis. This axis point is attached to an arm that is one of 3 or 4 that rotate on a second axis. While turning on a single axis is nothing to write home about (Think Merry Go Round). 2 axes turning gets pretty intense.
Here is where we can compare ourselves on Earth to the Scrambler. The Earth would be the axis at the end of the long arms. The example has 4 moons, but when you are riding, you get the idea about the forces the Moon is feeling. And for the earth, it is being whipped around in all different ways.
Another thought that you should remember (not in the scrambler example). We on Earth face the gravitational pull of the Moon each time we face the moon. At that time (and then again 12 hours later) we experience its strongest pull. It is so strong that it pulls on the Earth so much that we can see it in the tides (Wow, I made it back to surfing!). It actually creates a bulge in the Earth’s crust.
Tracking the Lunar Month
Here we get to the point of this article. Each lunar phase carries with it a specific energy.I have them listed below, along with their energetic description. For this article series, I will be going through each of the phases and explaining more about that time and the energy that we experience.
Thanks for coming along for the ride.

In the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Astrology Still Gets a Bum Rap.
You would think that in a world where people performed magic spells, and curses, there would be an open minded awareness of such arts as Astrology. But as you read through the series, you soon learn this is not the case.
This is a case where reading the books provides a more extensive view of the Wizarding World than if you only watched the movies. there is only so much you can cram into a 3 hour movie. Some details had to be erased. The case of Astrology and Astronomy are one example.
Astronomy, as a subject at Hogwart’s school, is addressed in a few of the books, starting with book 1 – The Sorcerer’s Stone. It’s one of the classes they attend (at night of course). They draw star charts and discuss planets. Its very much treated as any science would be in our own existence. And as a plot device, useful to set the scene.
It is not until the 3rd book, Prisoner of Azkaban, where Astrology is introduced. And it is done with humor and derision. Movie watchers only saw Professor Trelawney – Half Blind, kinda crazy and prone to weird fits of insanity (we later find out to be prophesies.
Hermione Granger helps push the points about Trelawney home by referring to her as an old fraud and and calling the whole subject of Divination “a bunch of rubbish.” Her preference in subjects was for Arithmancy (dare we call it numerology)?
Truth be told, the books are not much kinder to her. Though they do discuss in much more detail some of the subjects that she teaches, including tea leaf reading, crystal balls and Astrology.
Knowing a little bit about astrology, the interplay about Astrology homework is actually very funny. But it points out a blatant disrespect for the subject.
Some Personal Notes on Astronomy and Astrology
In my freshman year in college, I decided to take an Astronomy class. As a business major, I was required to take a science with a lab. I had already studied both Chemistry and Biology in high school and was looking for something different.
And Astronomy sounded so cool. I could go on star gazing tours, go visit the observatory (Palomar Mountain was only about 30 miles away and the University had a partnership there). Learning about the planets and the solar system had more of an appeal to me than chemicals and dissections.
Besides this, it was one of the few classes that I could get. San Diego State University boasted over 45,000 students at the time. Most classes were held in large lecture halls, and still would fill to capacity. You took what you could get.
Day one in the class re educated me quickly about the “fun” in astronomy. Astronomy could be better described as applied mathematics, chemistry, and physics all together.
NOTE FOR FUTURE REFERENCE: I have never taken physics, so most of my simplistic descriptions of physics principles will be borrowed from someone else’s work who knows WTF they are talking about.
As my major would eventually change from Business to Economics (which is another applied mathematics, specifically statistics and calculus, field) the mode of learning fit right into my own mindset.
Astronomy is all about DESCRIBING what is going on in the universe around us. It provides the descriptive information that has helped us to ask some of the more important questions about life, the universe and everything.
Now the Science of Astrology has been studied for a long time. So long, that most of what was learned in the past was either forgotten or has been ignored or suppressed by different groups trying to control the narrative (Think organized religion or the organized education, or governments).
These organizations, for their own purposes have sought to define our world on their terms – in order to control the thoughts of the populations at large. But as in a fair game of poker, the cards call themselves. Facts are presented. Hopefully people will not continue to keep these facts to themselves.
People in Babylon, Ancient Greece, Egypt, India, China, Scandinavia, Central, South and North America. Have actively studied what they saw in the sky. Each sought answers to the questions of their existence, and to discover what they could about the world around them. They would ask questions like:
- What was that crazy light that just streaked across the sky?
- Why did the Moon just disappear and darkness just fill the sky for an hour?
- Why do most stars always in the same place in the sky while others appear to wander across the sky?
Given that very little of what they knew can be figured out today due to lack of written records, we can only look at what they left for us and guess. And they have left us some pretty big hints:
- The Pyramids being built with exact measurements and specific alignments towards cardinal points and directions. And in alignment to the constellation Orion.
- Stonehenge and many other megalithic sites aligned exactly to the equinoxes.
- An understanding of the procession of the equinoxes.
- “Gods” named same at the planets.
The sophistication of what they built far exceeds our own estimation of their ability to understand things.
But Back to Astrology
I have wanted to gather, in one place, a comprehensive explanation many aspects of Astrology. I have been studying Astrology pretty closely for about 8 years. And while I have many books and know of many websites, it is still a challenge to answer what I feel are basic questions.
I feel that there are many others out there that may feel the same.
So while this is not exactly Defense Against the Dark Arts (until we get to sections on how the Archons and Illuminati Elites use astrology to time their attacks that is), it is important information. So I am opening a second “class.
Future articles will be headlined ASTRO101. It will be training as basic as it gets. As I have found. astrology can get pretty deep pretty fast. So I will be walking through subjects as slowly as it takes for me to be able to explain them.
More than likely, there will be fewer references to good old Harry Potter. But I promise to keep it fun.
Again, as with Defense, I am hoping that these will be interactive subjects for all to engage in.
Now we have piqued your interest with the idea of learning a little bit more about the mysterious world around us, I would like to take a few moments to say a little more about what this is (AND what it isn’t). This may tell you whether you are interested in continuing. I hope we can keep your interest.
A Mystery School –
Know Yourself. Know the Universe.
There are many races in the galaxy, but how many have the opportunity to be expressing their souls in collaboration with a planet that is the physical embodiment of the very consciousness that designed them?
I start from the point of view advanced by the gnostics and the hermetics of “KNOW THYSELF, KNOW THE UNIVERSE.” Much of our future discussions will be about thoughts and ideas that have slipped by the wayside of modern education. Under the filter of fiction (like the Harry Potter series and other fascinating works), many of these subjects can be revealed, remembered and opened up for discussion.
The Mystery schools were developed to help those who were ready to understand the mysteries. Often, the messages were hidden in symbols that would be revealed to initiates of the school. And these symbols and secrets are all around us. Sometimes we recognize them and engage. Other times you know something is being said but are at a loss as to what. And still others most people notice nothing at all.
Who is spreading the secrets? What are they trying to accomplish? All questions we want answered and many of them that either do not have answers or the answers just create more questions. Someone is keeping a secret and it is likely they do not want you or I to know.

It Started with Astrology
Through Oracle Report we have been reporting about the affects of astrology on our daily lives. This primarily includes planetary geometry as well as a faithful following of the lunar cycles and the Sabian Symbols for each degree of the zodiac. In so doing, we have touched upon so many features that can affect us all in the course of time.
I personally like the analogy of surfing to tell the story about the affects of Astrology. You paddle out to surf in the ocean, and you are facing many different aspects. There are tides, and swells, currents and water temperatures. Consider also wind or rain or even animals or plants that may be in the water with you. And then also remember that you can choose a different beach.
Each of these can affect your ability to surf the wave. They can be the difference between washed out dregs, and amazing ride, or getting drilled by shore break. Your knowledge of the elements and how to face them can make the difference.
The analogy works so well because it is the same with the aspects studied in astrology. It is so much more than your daily horoscope or modelling your personality around your birth sign. The aspects work like the tides – subtly influencing your life and the world around you. You can sped a lifetime paying attention to the aspects and still learn more every day.
My own personal journey with astrology began after talking with a friend of mine about Mercury Retrograde. Up until about 2010, though I knew about planetary retrogrades from an Astronomy class I took in college, I was unaware of the potential affects.hearing about issues with communications, travel and specifically contracts hit home with me pretty hard. At the time I had been on a pretty intense job search. I was getting through a Retrograde where I have a lot of very promising job potentials which magically fell apart during the Retrograde.
Though I could not say that it was definitely caused by Mercury Retrograde at the time, I thought it was very interesting. And watching over the next couple years where similar things would occur made me really pay attention to these times. For me, paying attention has been the difference.
Consider What Else Might be Out There
While astrology is the cornerstone of our work, there are many things out there that we have touched upon that go beyond the realm of astrological aspects.
Some of it is other people. Powerful people. Rich people. Secret societies. These are examples of people who have learned about secrets. About energies. And through their understanding of Astrology have taken advantage ofthe energies to further their own plans.
But it may not just be people. What other realms are out there that we are not able to perceive? Is it spiritual? Dimensional? We have talks at length about Archontic energies. How might this affect us.
Where in the Woo Woo?
This introduction is not meant to go deeply into any of these topics (just a little intro) But it offers a glimpse of things that may be out there. And then ask you how far down the rabbit hole you might like to come with me.
We have been considering creating a sort of master class of individuals who are interested in finding out more about the world around us – especially the part of the world around us we have been trained not to look at. Call them the dark corners and crevices.
The Mainstream has done its level best to hide them and distract from them. All the while they are often hoarding and coveting this information for themselves.
Despite their best efforts, some of it has gotten out. I hope to shed some light on it. Open people’s eyes and then open some doors as well.
It’s a Mystery – Like a School
What does it take to join? Very little for now. Just the willingness to read and a request that you share your own experiences when asked.
I will be starting this trek under the filter of Harry Potter. I love the Harry Potter series for many reasons. For most, it is just a fictional story about a boy who just happens to be a wizard. Whether intentionally or not, the stories then reveal so much more that a cute little story about good vs evil.
There are secrets in his world. Monstrous secrets. Some of them amazing. Some of them sinister. Other’s seemingly benign.
We will range all over. Often returning to Hogwarts. Sometimes visiting other starry realms, but usually relating them right back here to our own lives here in Gaia’s garden.
This Christmas season, did you acquire at least one calendar as a gift (whether it be from a friend, someone in your family, an insurance agent, the neighborhood realtor)? We begin 2019 with some fireworks and a toast and a new calendar. We prepare for another trip around the sun. And we hang up the calendar – taking the place of the 2018 version.
With this short ebook, I plan to answer some questions about the calendars we use to count the passing of time on this Big Blue Marble we call home.
Some of this will be practical knowledge – with advice to help you remember things about your life.
It is also a reference book – giving you important dates to mark on your calendar, including:

Lunar Phase: 3rd Quarter Phase
Moon in Scorpio
Today is the first day of the Gregorian calendar year. And the first entry on our trip around this next year. I will be updating the calendar page throughout the month. I welcome your comments, thoughts, additions and the rest. thank you for jumping on board!
