Winter Solstice 2022 – 12/12/2022 4:47 PM
Otherwise know as the Shortest day of the year (Northern Hemisphere) and The Longest Night. It is the first Day of Winter and the beginning of the 4th quarter of the Astrological year – first day of Capricorn.
As with the Spring Equinox, Summer Solstice and autumnal equinoix, it is a cardinal position in our annual journey around the sun. This year it closely coincides with the New Moon as well (which we will see on the 23rd).
At our house we celebrate it as the day in which the days begin getting longer – 1-2 minutes may not seem like a lot, but after a week, that means at least 10 minutes longer. It is something to put a positive spin on it all.
In the Germanic and Scandanavian tradition it is the beginning of Yule. I will talk more about this another day. Yule is a pagan observance that has wormed its way into so many of our own Western Christmas traditions. These are the same kinds of things that make the same Christians whose heads explode when people say Happy Holidays to them instead of Merry Christmas. But they seem like fun and interesting traditions that deserve a chance to be followed. I will be exploring them over thje next few days.
