The Philosopher’s Stone

I have to admit that when I was writing my article last night, and had the picture seen at the right of here, 2 of my sons commented about it. My 13 year old shouted “Illuminati!” My 17 year old commeted about the devil.

The philosopher’s stone symbol is known as ‘the squared circle’, which contains the four classical elements (Fire, Air, Water and Earth) within according to some hermeticists.

According to their belief, the four corners of the square in the center surrounding the circle represents the four classical elements and the circle represents the fifth element these elements create, that is, the totality, the way to reach beyond the physical world and venture into higher realms.

I asked myself a couple questions. 1) How did my sons ever learn about this symbol? 2) How did it become associated with the Illuminati and Evil in their eyes?

Now, my kids are both avid gamers and watch more youtube than lamestream TV. I am kind of shocked that these subjects are being talked about. And I would probably more shocked to find out what they are saying.

Oddly enough, the symbol is similar to the one used by J.K. Rowling for the Deathly Hallows. Add to that the fact that the Original title of the British version of the first book was Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone, I am starting to feel the connection.

It’s About Alchemy

While the symbol is called The Philosopher’s Stone, it has been wedded entirely to the practiceof Alchemy. Alchemy was an area of study, sometimes described as a science, sometimes described as a branch of philosophy, that was practiced in Europe, Asia, and Africa. It began in the early centuries AD, primarily in Egypt, Greece, and Rome, but eventually spread as far as India, China, and England by the 12th century. Note this timeframe as it keeps coming up in this discussion.

Alchemists had three main goals:

  • Create the Philosopher’s Stone (a legendary substance said to be capable of transforming lead into gold and giving the user eternal life)
  • Create an elixir of eternal youth and health
  • Transmute metals (specifically into gold)

Creating the philosopher’s stone is the ultimate goal of every alchemist. That is why it is a central element in alchemical symbolism. Because of its fantasticness, the search for it created Many Many frauds, which has forever tarnished the reputation of alchelical practitioners.  Improved scientific knowledge, particularly in chemistry, also lead to alchemy’s decline in the 18th and 19th centuries as scientists “discovered” many of the goals of alchemy weren’t possible.

The Four Classical Elements In Alchemy: Fire, Water, Earth And Air

The ancient Greeks believed everything in the universe was made of four basic elements; fire, water, earth and air. Also called, the four classical elements and the four elements of matter, the symbols representing these elements were commonly used in alchemy.

Is it any wonder that these elements also are part of modern Western Astrology

  • Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)
  • Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)
  • Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)
  • Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)

Fire Alchemy Symbol

The alchemical element of fire is represented by an upward triangle in alchemy.

It is associated with masculinity, fiery emotions like anger and love and naturally, warm colors like orange and red. It is a hot and dry element according to Aristotle’s classification of these four basic elements.

Air Alchemy Symbol

The alchemical opposite of earth in Greek classification of elements of matter is air. The alchemical air symbol is also the exact opposite of the one representing earth. It is an upward-looking triangle with a horizontal line crossing through it near the top part.

Aristotle classified the air element as hot and wet. Air is associated with life-giving forces, like the breaths, and the colors white, grey and blue.

Earth Alchemy Symbol

The alchemical earth element is associated with physical movements and the colors brown and green, that is to say, quite literally the colors of the earth. The alchemy symbol for the Greek basic element of earth is a downward triangle with a horizontal line crossing through it near the bottom part.

The earth was classified as a cold and dry element by Aristotle.

Water Alchemy Symbol

Being the opposite of the alchemical fire element, water is represented with a downward-looking triangle. Classified as a cold and wet element by Aristotle, water is associated with femininity and befittingly, the color blue.

My point in bringing up the symbols is that they have (or had) meanings to the people who practiced these sciences. Adn they have been around for a very long time.

And think of some of the other symblos and glyphs we see. There are the symbols for the Astrological Sign. The glyphs for the planets. These I look at every day in the daily astrology charts. Again part of a hisoric/ancient past that we carry only bits of memory about.

Mysteries, Secrets or Both

This short introduction to symbols is just to get your feet wet. The Philosopher’s Stone symbol was familiar and happened to show up on the cover of the Kabalion. The book is written by “Three Initiates.” Sounds mysterious and secretive to me.

But what are Mystery schools?

A Mystery School is a body of initiates who have dedicated themselves to preserving, protecting and perpetuating the mystery teachings.

Throughout the ages the Mystery Schools have hidden in plain sight. They have built noble temples all over the world and provided services both to the public and behind closed doors for only ‘those who have eyes to see,’ and ‘those who have ears to hear.’

There is very little historical record of them, other than that they exist. Think of a few today:

The Masons: Freemasons, Blue Lodge, The Shrine or whatever they are calling themselves. The Illuminati. The Brotherhood. The Bilderburgs. Opus Dei. The Elks. Skull and Bones. The Templars. The “small group of loyal Americans” who built the Georgia Guidestones.

Do you know much about them? Maybe. Maybe not. Probably not unless you happen to be a member and then the secrets may be yours to keep as well. For some, it might be just something to do with their time. For others, it may be a polt for word domination.

At least for now, it is important to know that they exist and they have secrets of their own that may or may not have relevance to your life.

But the point I am trying to make is that some of them claim to be holding and protecting secrets potentially for thousands of years. And while I am doubtful that I will be able to crack my way into some of these roganizatiosn to find out, there may be things we cin find hiding in plain sight.

I am keeping my eyes open for sure!
