The announcement this week regarding Autism and the use of certain pharmaceutical products brings to mind another interesting historical battle that has had shockingly similar results.

What the Oat Lobby Might Claim

In today’s world we are bombarded with Big Pharma’s commercials for everything from Ozempic to Skyrizy. All of them drugs promising to make our lives better and right a wrong that was caused by something else.

For me, having worked in Advertising and in the medical industry as well, I am well versed in all the ins and outs of telling a compelling and “legally accurate” story about a product. But more specifically, the kinds of claims you are allowed to make and the disclaimers that are required.

The present kerfuffle reminds me of another product in the past – Oats.

We have known since the beginning of time (or at least since the 60’s) that Oats – specifically oatmeal is good for you and good for the heart specifically. How did we know that? Because the oat lobby convinced the FDA (or whatever they called themselves at the time) that this was the case. And it allowed them to use the claim in all of their advertising. And a generation of Boomers and GenX’ers would grow up knowing this. Despite all this, oats have steadily lost ground to many other commodities (wheat, corn and soybeans mostly).

Fast forward to 1997 and a new trend has broken. Cholesterol. And how it gums up your arteries and causes Heart Disease. So the Oat lobby, seeing an opportunity to further propagandize the world into eating more oatmeal because of how healthy it was, found a way to claim that Oats somehow reduced evil sticky horrible murderous cholesterol. Then they proceeded to try and put oats in everything.

Not just cereal, but breakfast bars and pretty much every baked good that you could find. They cooked it into crackers and cookies. Even put it in dog food. I remember it well because of all the weird advertising and posturing to be the most healthy product. And since the advertising term “healthy” usually translates to tasteless and bad I usually avoided all of these things. And when they start adding things to dog food, you know they have found a group of suckers buyers who are influenced by such claims.

The punch-line came a few years later when another group of studies came out claiming that oats were about as effective at reducing cholesterol as was the cardboard that packaged them. It was brutal. I can imagine that for packaged good marketers and their advertising agencies that this was as bad as the 1929 stock market crash. Thankfully for anyone with tastebuds, the trend was over. And oats could go away again.

And then the Little Lambs

My cute little oatmeal story is not without a moral. Or at least is serves and a humorous introduction of sorts to what happened Monday afternoon after Donald Trump announced that there was a provable tie between the use of Tylenol (oops I mean acetaminophen) during pregnancy and Autism. And with that, the Acetaminophen lobby absolutely lost its shit!

This is an old meme, but you get the point

I am making this comparison between Oats and Tylenol primarily because the entire big pharma advertising conglomerate just did the exact same thing that the Oat lobby did when they lost the ability to make claims about cholesterol. This has the potential of being more devastating that when that freak was poisoning Tylenol back in 1982.

For all of us who live day to day with autism, this is the first glimmer of hope we have seen in the quest to discover how in 60 years this condition has gone from 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 32 kids born. The curve is too steep for this condition to be naturally occurring. And anyone following the issue knows the level of taboo in even suggesting that there could be a specific cause.

The problem though is that this should NOT be a political issue. Everyone in the world should want to know what might be causing Autism. And the suggestion that it is as a result of genetics and improved diagnostics techniques is just plain stupid and insulting.

Be that as it may, once something comes out of Trump’s mouth, the battle line is drawn. And not only did the acetaminophen lobby loss its shit, but so did the whole of the political left. They went completely bananas in the last 2 days. But isn’t it also hilarious that the organization that uncovered the links to autism were not some MAGA crazies. It was Harvard – bastion of the educational left.

Now, is this just because of Trump? Or are they aligned even more closely with the factions that benefit from Autism? That is one rabbit hole I am not ready to dig into (sorry I am tired, but I will do it again another night).

But suffice it to say, this has been a REALLY big week for Trump.

  • Autism and Tylenol
  • The Kimmel Thing
  • Humiliating the UN on Immigration
  • Humiliating the Euro Globalists on everything else at the UN

Who could have expected this from the first week in autumn. Pandora’s box is open with the FDA and pharmaceutical establishment today. It’s getting real!
