  4. a mysterious energy field created by life. It binds the galaxy together and gives those sensitive to it extraordinary abilities, such as levitating objects, mind tricks, and precognition:

  2. make (someone) do something against their will:

I think I like the Star Wars definition better than the Bing AI generated definitions fed by the Oxford Languages dictionary. And it serves as a good starting point for this series of discussions about Force and its influence in our life.

Now please understand, I am not particularly a fan of The Star Wars universe. I have seen most of the movies. None of the cartoons and red none of the disparate books.

For the movies, they needed to stop at the third (or the sixth, as the case may be.

The first movie was ground-breaking. The special effects had never been seen before. The story, while campy, was a Hero’s Journey story. Luke is thrown into the middle of a whole new world, and is forced (hee hee) to make his way. With lots of help. I was able to ignore the dialog meant to appeal to a 10 year old . . . probably because I was 10 years old at the time.

Since the story begins in medias res, in the middle of a rebellion. The movie was ripe to have a part 2. The story continues . . .

And it became a force to make billions of dollars over the past 47 odd years.

But What was The Force?

It was one of those unanswered questions that wove its way through all the subsequent adventures. Each episode offers a new piece of nuance about The Force, helping to loosely weave the universe together.

Its definition, in the words of old Ben Kenobi

“The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It’s an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together.”

For the most part, this is the only real direct definition you get in the first movie.

Han Solo builds upon it:

“Kid, I’ve flown from one side of the galaxy to the other, I’ve seen a lot of strange stuff, but I’ve never seen anything to make me believe there’s one all-powerful force controlling everything. There’s no mystical energy field that controls my destiny!”

Despite Han’s own doubt, he has no problem offering the common phrase, “May the Force be With You,” along with everybody else.

The rest is shown throughout the story. It is the energy field the binds the galaxy together and it is the plot device that holds the whole franchise together. And it builds over time.

So consider exactly what “The force” is.

  • It is magic – a power in the hands of a special few
  • It is Good and Evil
  • It is Everywhere – holding the universe together. Like the religious entity called God.
  • It is physical – like telekinesis
  • It is mental – allowing one to control minds . Jedi Mind tricks.
  • It is political power, used and controlled by powerful political factions.
  • It is sexy – Darth Vader was seduced by the Dark Side

It is a tremendous plot device for a story. Because it represents something we all desire. Power. How Many Star Wars fans have raised their hands and willed something to move? How Many have uttered “May the Force Be With You? Worn Start Wars underwear? Dressed up on May 4?

Despite the Muppets and bad dialog, it is part of our world today. Only a select few have no exposure to it.

And it starts the basis of my theme of Force, and how it is a part of all of our lives here.

And the story continues . . .

May the Force Be With You
