A few years back (1984 or 1985 or so), I got to witness a piece of Hollywood history. Funny part about it was that at the time, we did not have a clue that it was happening.

Puente Hills Mall

It was a weekend night and we had decided to go see a movie at the Puente Hills Mall. It was a convenient place to see movies and that was about 10 miles from home (for us, Whittier, California). They say it is in the City of Industry, but we would have called it Hacienda Heights (if you are interested, Fergie is from there).

Anyways, we arrived and took our usual circuitous route around the back to the theaters. Unfortunately, it was blocked off. Stranger than that was the fact that the parking lot was wet. Strange because it never rained in Southern California (droughts as all). We dismissed it all, drove around the other way and went to see out movie.

Had we been paying attention, we would have seen that they had chosen our mall to shoot the iconic scene in the movie Back to the Future where they are being chased by the Syrian Terrorists and Michael J Fox travels into the past to 1955

Now for people who do not live in Southern California, just letting you know that this is not the kind of thing that happens every day. We had no idea it was happening. It was just an inconvenience. After the movie came out (we saw it at the same theater BTW) we found out about what we had witnessed. Actually, there were a lot of scenes from that movie that were filmed in our area. The Higfh School scenes were at Whittier High School (not the school I went to, but my dad remembered that his locker was in the same block where the lockers in the movie were filmed). Funny thing. He would have been a high school senior in 1955.

This walk down memory lane came up because of this Facebook Meetup Group. A Friend of mine (who I had gone to the movies with) tagged the group of us, bringing up the memory.

I sit here tonight waxing nostalgic. I am watching the World Series (the Dodgers were my team growing up and I have had to watch way too many World Series where the Dodgers faced the Yankees).

But in Back to the Future World, this was the anniversary of the night that they went Back to the Future. And I can feel like I was a part of it.
