Every once n a while, when you are looking really hard, you can find beauty in unexpected places. Call it the flower growing in the gutter. It should not be there, but somehow it is. And by its simple being, beautifies the space.
Such was the case on Saturday morning on the morning news. This usual space of propaganda and bile happened to show a story that was a thing of beauty. It was about houseplants.
This Christmas, I asked my kids for house plants. It is time to breath some life into our living space. For the last 2 years, I have been growing lemon trees. But they are small plants for their first few years. And while they brighten my kitchen window, I was looking for more.
About a year and a half ago, our daughter bought us one of these things for mother’s day. It was one of those things that we were afraid was probably a regift, but it looked pretty cool. I had not killed a houseplant in a while we would see what we could do.
A year later, it is about triple the size and has become part of our home. Then I saw a meme on Facebook that made me think it really would be a good idea to try more of this.
It was the Snake plant meme. There are many different versions, but all say about the same thing. These plants have the ability to “filter” the air and produce more oxygen from CO2.
So I am giving that a try.
I was lucky. My kids gave me Home Depot gift cards. SO I went out and bout some plants. 3 Snake plants. two hanging Pothos plants, and 1 hanging spider plant. I also replaced the Aloe plant that has been on the verge of death for the past 5 years on my window sill. Aloe is so convenient to have for burns and such.
I think a lot of the reason I wanted this is my annual plan to ward off depression over the winter. I think that more living things in our immediate area will help that. At least I hope so.

But anyways, the story on the propaganda hour was about how over the pandemic, this guy in New Orleans had made a big business out of designing new and unique house plants.
Of course, most of the plants he created were these bougie (aka expensive) terrarium types. And I will be honest. I did not pay more that $15 for any of my new plants. But I may build up to these. They are super cool. And I think they also act as inspiration for the Food scaping projects I will be attempting this spring.
Toward the end of the news story, the true point of it came out. The guys they were interviewing was African American. And they wanted to point out that African American’s were not know for being business owners or being into plants. Hmmmm.
It had been a good story up to then. It was that flower in the gutter. That bright spot of life among the lifeless. It was just a gentle little reminder that the Weekend morning news would never change. Always agenda drive. Always propaganda. Even if it was dressed up nice.
