The First Day of Autumn
September 22 marks the first day of autumn. In the northern hemisphere it happens at 3:20 PM EST.
The Old Farmer’s Almanac has a really good page describing all the “happy” information about the first day of Fall.
It’s a really good article that I almost copied it completely to share here, but it was really long and I thought they might prefer that you go to their page to read it (and read all of their ads as well). So I recommend it!
I also stole a couple of graphics from google that do a really good job at explaining what is happening celestially. And also, what that means to us practically here on Earth.
How often do you look up at the sky? I remember taking Astronomy back in college. One of the things I had hoped was to learn more about what you are looking at up in the sky and be able to identify not just constellations and planets, but also things like the sunrise and sunset. In the end, I learned more about that from the Boy Scouts and from paying attention to the tide charts to go surfing.
The biggie for the equinoxes is that it means that the length of our days is essentially equal – 12 hours Daytime, 12 hours Nighttime. And for me, it is the day we call “Downhill day”.
I am what I would call “Summerfolk” to quote the Children;s book of the same name that my Mom read to me as a child. I am happiest with long hot sunny days. Wearing shorts and T-shirts. Sandals and NO SOCKS! Soon I will have to start wearing more clothing and shoes. And despite all of the things that people like about Autumn (Cool days, Changing colors, Pumpkin Spice et al), I am not a fan!
That Being Said . . .
Last week I received a special box from my friends at The Old Farmer’s Almanac. Since I am such a good and loyal customer (I paid them 12 bucks a few months ago for a subscription), I received my 2022 Farmer’s Almanac! And with it, I got a bunch of extra goodies. I thought that $12 was a small price to pay for all the goodies they offered. The Almanac itself costs $8.95 from the magazine rack at the store. And What I received:
- The 45th Anniversary Gardening Calendar – This thing is great and has a ton of interesting information that I will be sharing throughout the year. Plus it has the lunar phases marked on it.
- The Old Farmer’s Almanac Garden Guide 2021 Edition – It has lots of interesting articles and advertisements
- The Old Farmer’s Almanac Gardening for Everyone Volume 2 – More interesting gardening articles and very few advertisements
- An Almanac Club member Benefits envelope with more advertisements and a sticker for the back of my car (sure to peel paint one day) – one of those white oval stickers with the letters OFA and a bunch of other “exclusive” advertisements.
Yes, the experience was a whole lot like receiving my Publisher’s Clearinghouse envelope back 15 years ago. But the Calendar is super cool! And I was buying the Almanac anyways.
This will give me something to do with the longer nights at home. Sigh.
