From an Email I Received From The Atlas Society
We observe September 2nd as a celebration of Atlas Shrugged, its author Ayn Rand, and the values she celebrated: individualism, creativity, reason, productivity, and freedom. It’s the day Ayn Rand began writing her magnum opus, and this date is also featured significantly throughout the novel itself.
In its opening pages, Eddie Willers sees “the page of a gigantic calendar suspended in the sky… In the rusty light of this evening’s sunset, the rectangle read: September 2.” It’s the date Francisco D’Anconia makes his famous Money Speech, the date Hank and Dagny take the trip that leads them to Galt’s abandoned motor, and the day D’Anconia Copper is nationalized.
The novel was about more than government overreach—and consequent economic destruction and violations of individual rights—but about heroic entrepreneurship and individual achievement and free minds.
It’s also about relationships—and a community of productive creators, unwilling to be sacrificed or sacrifice others. Atlas Shrugged sounded a warning—and extended an invitation. I first read Atlas Shrugged in High School. I was about 17 and it was recommended to me. I remember both of my parents got a kick out of the fact I was randomly reading it. They had both read it. The only thing they commented about it (well my Dad anyway) was about the description of the lead Character being “dishevelled,” which I took from him to be some form of sexual reference.
The book was about 1088 pages. It took me a month and a half to read. And I read 2 Shakespearian plays (Hamlet and Troilus and Cressida), Medea, Oedipus Rex and a Tale of Two Cities during the same time (I had a rather psychotic English Teacher). And remember, I was reading Atlas for fun.
Still today I say that Atlas Shrugged was among the most significant books I have ever read. Significant because it brought to life so many of the problems we see in society. Was it overly dramatic? At times. Was it unrealistic? Sure. Did it paint the world in terms of completely black or white? Yes it did.
That is the joy of fiction. And when you look at political fiction, you are going to have this.
I think the thing that gets me still today is how polarizing the book and the author remains. Most people I know on the left hate Ayn Rand. And I mean HATE. And that is both those who have read her books and those who have not. And lets face it. Her books are not an easy read. 1088 pages and let me tell you that the type is small. About 70 of those pages are a single monolog that starts:
“For twelve years, you have been asking: Who is John Galt? This is John Galt speaking. I am the man who loves his life. I am the man who does not sacrifice his love or his values. I am the man who has deprived you of victims and thus has destroyed your world, and if you wish to know why you are perishing—you who dread knowledge—I am the man who will now tell you.”
And Ends:
“I swear—by my life and my love of it—that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.”
For the book it lays out the belief system of the people who have the power to control the world. And that power lies in their ability to decide whether to sacrifice themselves or to demand respect.
For Ayn Rand, it laid out her entire political philosophy. It very bluntly makes the case for capitalism vs collectivism. And its bluntness is probably a lot of the reason that the left hates her.
So in honor of Atlas Shrugged Day, I am recommending the book to all who have or have not read it (I have personally read it 4 times as well as watched the 3-part movie series). It may or may not change your entire life. But it will leave an impression.
