Happy Monday! “We are the dancers, we create the dreams.” ~A. Einstein
Now please understand, the amazing Albert Einstein quote above has been fact checked and “they” say he probably never said this. Killjoys! I think these THEY – the Snopes of the world are part of an agenda to dumbify all of us. Take away the wisdom or the folklore we have created.
And whether the great Einstein ever said “We are the dancers, we create the dreams,” it inspires me.
Like another Dance quote I remember from my childhood:
I danced in the morning
When the world was begun,
And I danced in the moon
And the stars and the sun,
And I came down from heaven
And I danced on the earth,
At Bethlehem
I had my birth.
Dance, then, wherever you may be,
I am the Lord of the Dance, said he,
And I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be,
And I’ll lead you all in the Dance, said he.
It was kind of a hymn we sang in church. And I say kind of because it did not show up in the official Episcopal Hymnal. Instead it was in a looseleaf binder created by our organist with other greats like Morning has Broken (popularized by Cat Stevens).
Thanks (or no thanks) due to organized religions, dancing is complicated. A lot of this was explained very well to the teenage ear in the Movie Footloose:
From the oldest of times, people danced for a number of reasons. They danced in prayer or so that their crops would be plentiful or so their hunt would be good. And they danced to stay physically fit and show their community spirit. And they danced to celebrate. And that, that is the dancing that we’re talking about. Aren’t we told in Psalm 149: ‘Praise ye the Lord. Sing unto the Lord a new song. Let them praise His name in the dance’?…It was King David. King David, who we read about in Samuel, and, and what did David do? What did David do? What did David do? ‘David danced before the Lord with all his might, leaping, leaping and dancing before the Lord.’ Leaping and dancing! Ecclesiastes assures us that there is a time to every purpose under heaven. A time to laugh and a time to weep. A time to mourn and there is a time to dance. And there was a time for this law, but not anymore. See, this is our time to dance. It is our way of, of celebrating life. It’s the way it was in the beginning. It’s the way it’s always been. It’s the way it should be now.
Why do we dance? Good question that I am in no position to answer. Other than awkward Jr High and High school dances and the occasional wedding dance, I have little to no experience with it . . . formally.
A few years back, ballroom dancing came into vogue with the hit reality show Dancing with the Stars. A ridiculous as it was, it did one thing well. It showed innocent people (albeit stars) attempting to look good on television doings very complex and difficult dances that took the pros YEARS to learn. And if my guess is right, inspired millions of others to go out and try their hands (or feet) at it.
And honestly, while I am absolutely no good at dancing formally, what’s the point in that anyway. When I have danced, it has always been more for the joy of movement and losing myself in the music. Allowing my body and mind to move to whatever I am listening to.
It’s the attitude of yet another unattributed quote about Dancing like nobody’s watching.
But as far as what Einstein had to say (or maybe not who knows) its about the dream. About being the dreamer and allowing yourself to get lost in the feeling. Breaking away from that which is around us and feeling the universe in ur midst.
Much of the key there may be attributed to music, but that discussion is for another day. For today, let’s dance.
