Do you Remember?
How exposed have you been to the power of positive thinking?
Not necessarily the Book by the same name – as defined by a quick Google search:
The Power of Positive Thinking is a 1952 self-help book by Norman Vincent Peale that teaches readers to achieve a happier, more successful life through faith, optimism, and practical techniques like affirmations and visualization to overcome worry and self-doubt.
My question directly relates to when you remember being exposed to it . . . iffin you ever were that is.
I ask the question for a couple reasons. First is to get you to ask yourself about what your level of knowledge is about it. Second is to recall when that was that you first learned it. Third is to ask what other sources influenced you since. Please stop reading and take a few minutes to answer these things
When we put them together, I will have some thoughts about it.
My Specific Journey
I am asking you to make this little journey. I of course will do it as well.

Level of Knowledge – Better than average. I have read a lot. Norman Vincent Peale’s being but one of the sources.
First Learned – 1980. I was in 8th grade and was enrolled in a class called “See You At The Top.” It was not something I signed up for. I just showed up the first day of school because it was on my schedule. Looking at it later it was probably planned out as most of the people in the class seemed to be a bit troubled. For me it was depression caused by bullying. Junior High sucked.
The class was named for the book of the same name by Zig Ziglar. Throughout the year we went through the book and worked on the steps towards the Top. I think in the end it was a mental health therapy class for kids who did not know they were in therapy. It stuck with me.
Since – While the class in 1980 was helpful, it did not inspire in me a journey of self-development. Muck of that would come later – beginning about 2002. It was then that I was introduced to Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.
If you haven’t read it yourself, please know that this is not a “greed is good” Gordon Gecko from Wall street kind of kind of story. Instead, it offered the same kinds of insight that See You at the Top did. It teaches a “Philosophy of Achievement” based on 13 principles for attaining personal and financial success.
And since then, I cannot count the number of other self-improvement books I have studied.
Your Dreams
Our minds are amazing things. We have the most powerful computing machines between our ears. More powerful than the strongest computers (AI not withstanding yet). Our problem is in not knowing how to harness the power inside. If there were an easy way to do so, we would all be Einstein’s or Tesla’s. Of course, part of their genius was that they were able to utilize parts of their minds in ways most cannot.
Which is where I start again with Dreams. In the dictionary sense, these are the mind pictures that are born from our subconscious. Like a movie screen while you sleep.
But also, they include the fantasies we come up with when we allow our minds to wander and consider that which may not have been considered before. They become the fuel for our plans for the future. The trick is to hone the engines of or minds and bodies to make them happen.
I was thinking along these lines when I developed the Happy Monday message today. And by happy circumstance, I came across a list made by someone (nameless for today). This person’s insight offers a mental blueprint or map toward achieving dreams.
Eleven lessons learned from a lifetime of building dreams
1) You are never too young to do something great
2) You have to love what you do
3) Think Big – It’s just as hard to solve a small problem as a big problem
4) Work Hard
5) Don’t lose your momentum
6) To change the world, dare to be an outsider
7) Trust your instincts
8) Believe in the American Dream
9) Think of yourself as a winner
10) Be an original
11) Never give up
Never let someone tell you that something is impossible
Can you Guess who it is?
