Happy Canada Day one and all! Our friends in The Great White North are all celebrating, parading, drinking beer, eating poutine, partying, drinking beer and generally enjoying themselves today.

For us in the USA, its just another day. We are preparing for our own Independence Day on July 4th and generally pay no attention to celebrations outside ourselves.

Is it selfishness? Maybe. Is it that our media does not report it? Probably. Is it because this one is nowhere quite as fun as other Internationalist celebrations like Cinco de Mayo or St Patty’s Day? Most likely.

Canada only has about 40 million inhabitants (citizens?). Our own California has 39 million (and if you count all the people who fled the Peoples Republic of California since it became inexorably marxist, it would be higher than Canada).

Funny thing about our friends to the North. We never really pay attention to them. Except when we are watching a Hockey game and they play Oh Canada. They have always been our friends. That is to say they are friends who do not really seem to like us that much. At least if you listen to icons like Neil Young – who hates us so much he became a dual citizen.

I visited there once. To Montreal in January. It was really cold. We went on a tour one day out in the country and the wind chill was minus 40 degrees F.

I was afraid the people would be rude and not like us. The opposite was true. The locals were very interested in talking to us. And super friendly. Even let us pay in dollars (why not, dollars were worth more).

As with so many things, you can’t always believe what you hear about a place ot a people until you experience them yourself. And while I would not recommend visiting the Great White North (Montreal anyways) in January, I would imagine a trip up there in the summer months to be an absolute blast.

So please lift a can or Labatts or Moosehead today in celebration of Canada Day.

And for your listening pleasure, from South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, here is a special rendition of the Oscar Nominated song (performed Live at the Oscars by Robin Williams). Blame Canada!

PS The adventure continues. While I have a backup PC I am using, it may take some time to figure out how to convert the daily charts into a usable format. Another Day. Another Donut!
