Please Standby for Some Cultural Misappropriation
Cinco de Mayo was a joke in Spanish class in the same way that President Kennedy’s “Ich bin ein Berliner” is a joke in German classes. Bad grammar and a complete misunderstanding of the other culture.
Cinco de Mayo is an American Holiday (read that as a product of the United States). It is an excuse to sell Mexican beer and tequila and Mexican food. For our family, it was Taco Monday (not to ever be mistaken for Taco Tuesday).
But the alcohol and the food and maybe a cheap sombrero are all that the holiday has to offer. So many will try and say it is Mexican Independence Day or something like that. And there may be some unremembered observance involved. But really it is just an excuse.
You have to wonder where all the people freaking out about Columbus Day are in regard to this one. As everyone may recall, there has been an ongoing campaign to change Columbus Day into Indigenous Peoples Day – possibly as a way of apologizing for the entry of Columbus into the Americas eventually spelling the end to the Native population. However, Columbus Day is one of the more important holidays in Puerto Rico (a United State protectorate).
Here’s Where it Gets Interesting
To put some more relevance to this conversation, consider this:
Population Indigenous Americans – 6.79 Million
Population of Puerto Ricans – in PR 3.2 Million – in the United States 5.8 Million
Population Mexicans in America – 35.9 Million
Now at what point are these holidays to be considered Cultural Misappropriation? Or are they more Cultural Appreciation or Celebration?
Population of Irish Americans – 38.6 Million
I do not see anyone claiming that St Patty’s Day is Cultural Appropriation no matter how much Green Beer and Fries they consume.
Melting Pot
Part of what has made this country what it is, is the diversity. So many different groups of immigrants coming together into this crazy singular national experience. Consider this (numbers provided by Googles’ always willing AI engine):
English Americans – 46.6 Million
Scottish Americans – 25 Million
Polish Americans – 8.8 Million
Italian Americans – 18 Million
French Americans – 25.8 Million
German Americans – 40 Million
African Americans – 39.6 Million
Hawiian Americans – 1.2 Million
Russian Americans – 1.8 Million
Japanese Americans – 1.6 Million
Chinese Americans – 4.5 Million
India Americans – 5.2 Million
Now does anyone want to count the cultural holidays celebrated by each of these populations and how much attention they get in the national media?
My point in this exploration was not clear to me at the beginning. But becomes more clear as you consider the numbers and ask where you all fit into them.
So many people are interested in their heritage. This can be seen with all the DNA testing systems out there. You get a cute report based on a DNA sample (safely cataloged by the Deep State). How many of those have caused family fights worse than the Hatfields and McCoys? For so many of us Americans, we fit into many groups.
I, for instance can claim, Scottish, English and German heritage. But my German ancestors were actually immigrants from Russia who moved to California from Nebraska during the Dust bowl. Call them Oakies maybe? The other Germans were Pennsylvania Dutch. The Scotts on both sides were snooty New Yorkers.
We all have a history. Few can say they are purebreds of a single area. And if they can, more power to them. How much of that heritage affects our life here and now? That is up to each of us to decide.
For me, I am a Southern California boy transplanted to Pennsylvania. I don’t think it means that much. But it is my history.
What’s yours? Feel free to share it.
