Wednesday April 2 World Autism Day
This morning, I found out that yesterday (April 2) was World Autism Day. It is one of those United Nations designated observances. And despite being pretty well connected to the new world, I heard NOTHING about it either online or on TV. And only found out about it by seeing a meme a day late.
That being said, I spent the better part of the day trying to have my autistic son admitted to an in-patient facility. It was the logical next step after he physically attacked us after an explosive incident. Happy World Autism Day!
This is the autism I know and live. And it is the autism they do not show on TV on in the movies. It is the autism that has people constantly in meetings with teachers, school councilors, social workers, therapists, psychiatrists, behavior specialists. All who call themselves “professionals” to differentiate themselves from us stupid parents.
This is the autism that watched out precious babies develop at rates that they do not talk about in all the parenting books. Whether it is physical, intellectual, emotional or whatever. We find educations, physical therapists, occupational therapists, reading specialists, aides and anyone we can get to try and connect with our children.
Outside the Autism community understand the Autism Spectrum. There is no single clear diagnosis for autism. No blood test. No exact definition.
Since my son came to us (through foster care at age 1 months) the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders – 2013) has recategorized and redefined what Autism is. At least as far as the medical community is expected to see it. The previous editions were DSM-4-TR-2000, DSM-4-1994. When 5 came out, for a year, all of us parents were being told that we may lost our diagnosis (as well as all of the related services that we had fought for) due to the way it was recategorized. Especially with kids diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome.
The definition for Autism Spectrum Disorder involves a whole bunch of different symptoms. Each is studied and then rated on a scale of severity by a number of different “professionals” as well as a couple different questionnaires filled out by the caretakers (aka parents).
Since 2013, it has been easier dealing with the diagnosis issue. For me, anyone wanting to question my son’s diagnosis he is verbal and looks like most average kids) I offer to have them sit with him for 5 minutes and see if they can figure it out. After he regales them with his rock collection and favorite stuffed animals, they get it. Usually.
Diagnoses aside, what it comes down to is when you have a Neurodivergent person in your life you have a divergent life. Every part of your day must be considered to align with that neurodivergence. And when it does not . . . it is complicated.
I bring all of this us as a way of bringing attention to the Autism that most people never see. They say 1 in 36 kids is on the spectrum. In 2000, it was 1 in 150. In 1990 it was 1 in 1000. The medical industry is doing EVERYTHING in its power to not give a reason for it. You want proof, just read the wikipedia page on it.

One of the pieces of Hope that I have felt through the reelection of Donald Trump was in the inclusion of Robert F Kennedy Jr in his cabinet. Truly understand that I have almost nothing in common with RFKJ politically. However his fight with this issue of Autism and its potential causes that they will not allow us to talk about (And I am not mentioning the V-word here) is inspiring.
Donald Trump’s Proclamation
On World Autism Awareness Day, we recognize the millions of Americans living with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Their proud perseverance in overcoming tremendous hurdles is emblematic of the strength and grit that makes America great. The First Lady and I extend our heartfelt appreciation to the families, friends, and communities aiding Americans with ASD as we empower every citizen to take part in and shape our new golden age.
Autism now affects 1 in 36 children in the United States, a staggering increase from the 1980s, when the disorder was found in only 1 to 4 out of every 10,000 individuals. I created the Make America Healthy Again Commission to investigate and address the root causes of our escalating health crisis, with a focus on childhood disorders like autism. As part of this effort, my Administration is prioritizing gold-standard research and increasing transparency to gain new insights to aid those with ASD.
Under my leadership, our great Nation will be stronger than ever before, with opportunities for all Americans to thrive and prosper. Despite challenges, Americans with ASD have made, and will continue to make outstanding contributions for our country and the world. – The White House
Fluff maybe. But it gives me hope. Will it bring my son safely home in a few weeks? Doubtful. What is safe anyways.
