After reading the book 1984 (which I read consequently in January of 1986), I thought that I had added a level of immunity to myself that was better than any vaccine. The book was for me the ultimate Red Pill. It satiristically explained a whole lot that I had spent the first 19 years of my life scratching my head about.
Someone was lying to us. A lot of someones in fact.
It was much more than the Dan Rathers, Peter Jennings and Sam Donaldsons of the world. They were just the mouthpieces. But they were WILLING mouthpieces. They seemed to BELIEVE all the bullshit they were reading on the teleprompters.
But how many times did people in the seventies and eighties question the blatantly obvious bias in the news media. It wasn’t until Rush started saying it out loud before anyone started doing something about it . . . like starting a network like FoxNews in order to provide balance – or an outlet to what THEY were not reporting.
But anyways, back to NewSpeak.
This morning while taking in second hand smoke via CBS News, I saw a particular piece of bullshit that made me stop to take pause. And it really had nothing to do with the story – a little report about American military personnel being killed by a Iranian drone in the Middle East.
It was simply this. The scrolling headlines kept saying “3 Troops killed.” It hit me almost as strongly as when people of a certain persuasion insist that you use their pronouns and refer to themselves in the plural – They/Them. As a writer and a grammarist, my eyes skid to a halt when I read things that art grammatically wrong – specifically with number and gender.
A Troop is a group of soldiers. 3 Troops would be 3 groups of soldiers.
And the talking heads at CBS stuck assiduously to this usage. It annoyed me. I really started paying attention when I read a headline later on from CNN – where they referred to them a “service members.”
At this point, I knew I was stuck in a Newspeak loop. And it had nothing to do with people and everything to do with using politically correct speech in regard to what to call people in the military. So I did a little searching, and this is what I found among the networks and talking heads as to how they were referring to these soldiers who had died:
Troops – CBS
Military Folks – KJP
Service Members – CNN
________________ – MSNBC (they did not report any stories about this event)
Service Members – White House
Army Reservists – ABC News
US Soldiers – FOXNews and ABC News
Let’s go back in time a bit and we can see how the ultra sensitive political left had to change this.
Back in another era, this would have been reported as “US Soldiers” or “Men.” It is the “Men” that they have been acting like busy beavers to erase.
Up until the 60’s or so, Men was accurate. There were so few women in the military that it was an accurate description at all times.
It wasn’t until 1972 that women were even allowed into the Army. At present, the percentage of members of the armed services that are women is about 20%. I think they really stumbled over the subject for years until the Clinton years when they really started degenderizing the language. Then with Obama with Critical Race Theory being shoved down the throats of all government personnel, the degenderization was ushered in completely. Why not. They were rewriting everything. Might as well.
So my point here is another call to pay attention. Always be on the lookout for when THEY are fooling with our language. It is part of a plot to change the way we all think. This change fits a political narrative that they are trying to accomplish. Always question the narrative.
