Journeys

My mind has been drawn to Journeys this past month. Is has shown in my Happy Monday messages:

Happy Monday! Look for things that inspire you and share them. Make the world a better place!

Happy Monday! Be courageous. Have Faith. Go forward.

Happy Monday! A Hero’s journey starts with a call to adventure. Listen and Be Brave.

Happy Monday! If happiness is the goal, and it should be, then adventures should be top priority. – Richard Branson

Happy Monday! “Life is a journey, and if you fall in love with the journey, you will be in love forever.” Peter Hagerty

Maybe it’s the beginning of summer. Call it wanderlust. Maybe it is just wading in on the deep waters of life. Things are happening around us. You either get swept up in the flotsome and jetsome, or you paddle your board into it and ride the wave.

The Journey for me have been in the mind. Whether it is the books I am reading or the shows I am watching. And like music has always spoken to me, I think this has been just as strong.

What the Hello Am I Talking About?

Consider the Monday message about The Hero’s Journey. The Hero’s Journey is a theme very near and dear to my heart – entertainment wise that is. I enjoy a good adventure. And the theme runs strong in so many stories.
Consider some of my favorites: The Lord of the Rings, Dune, Harry Potter. All Hero’s journey stories I talk about them a lot here.

Stand By Me was the movie version of a short story written by Stephen King and published in the Book Different Seasons. Let’s face it. Stephen King, as an author, has been very type-cast. He is the king (haha) of horror. And for the most part that jusgement is by people who have never read his works. It is dime-store pulp fiction that they relate him to. The kind of book you would find next to a Louis L’Amour western or a Harlequin romance.

And while he has written extensively in the horror genre, it is certainly not his only game. And the casting as dime-store schlock horror falls far short of who he really is. For my part, I hold Mr. King in very high regard, especially in character development.

For his part, he uses “horror” to explore the human heart and the human mind. He brings to life in his writing what goes on in the minds of people who face the unimaginable. He continually shows how far one has to go until the human mind snaps in disbelief.

But back to Stand By Me and Different Seasons. I bring them up as they are examples of the Hero’s Journey and how it can be woven into many different genres.

I read the book Different Seasons back in about 1983 or 1984 – before the short story The Body was even considered as a movie. I was turned on to the book not becasue of the story The Body. Rather because of the 4th “novella” in the book, called The Breathing Method.

Funny thing about Different Seasons. It has so far spawned 3 separate movies (Stand By Me, Apt Pupil and The Shawshank Redemption). Two of these have transcended into cult status. And if you look at these three stories, you would be hard-pressed to call them “horror”.

They are stories. And for the most part, they are Hero stories. They follow the path. They show challenges, transformation and a return.

Actually the only story that really enters the horror realm is the last one, The Breathing Method. And that one hits on all twelve cylinders. And guess what. Thee is a movie version in the worls as well. At least there was at the beginning of the plandemic. We will see where that takes us.

But Anyways

Last month they were celebrating the 36 year anniversary of the relese of Stand By Me. And it got me thinking about the Hero’s Journey. And less about the story itself and more about how we are all on this Journey. The story is for us to write . . . and live.

Ask yourself at different times where you are on your own Journey. What does it reveal?
