You Are What You Eat
Growing up, my Mom had a ton of food rules that we did not understand. She might have been considered the 1970’s version of a health nut. Examples:
- Cereal was regular fare for breakfast, but only “Healthy” cereals. Special K, Cheerios, Corn Flakes, Buckwheat, Shredded Wheat, Grape Nuts, Oat Meal or Cream of Wheat. Forget the fact we would pour multiple spoons full of sugar on top.
- Milk – 5 half gallons a week minimum. And we drank it white. No Chocolate syrup or Quik. She would sometimes say OK to Carnation Instant Breakfast or Ovaltine.
- Bottled Water with Fluoride – LA water was pretty much undrinkable. So we always had a water cooler.
- Vitamins – and not the Flintstones kind. We got prescription vitamins. They were Red Purple and Orange. And there were always fewer of the red and purple ones than the orange. We would scarf those up first and get stuck finishing off the icky orange ones for weeks.
My parents would regularly read Consumer Reports. It’s a publication that still exists online. But back in the 70’s, we just had magazines. And us kids hated that one. It was the one that told Mom every year which cereals were good for you and which ones were, in my Mom’s words, empty calories.
My point in walking down my food memory lane was specific to the vitamin part. Growing up, my mom was a stickler on vitamins. We never knew why. Since they were the “no fun” medicine vitamins, we always thought of it like a punishment. But it is something you should really think about. Taking supplements that is. And how important it probably is in your young and formative years.
Where is this in the Literature
But you ask yourself. You ask a doctor. You ask a Nutritionist. Do we really need vitamin pills? In my lifetime I have NEVER been told by a doctor that I should be taking vitamins. Never. And other than my Orthdontist who banned all Gum and Soda, I have never had a doctor even suggest what to eat on a diet. In my experience, they do not talk about it.
Getting this information from doctors is not an easy task. We have had multiple run ins with doctors for our kids. working in foster care, we have faced a lot of medical issues. And a lot of issues specific to diet. Drug babies are notoriously hard to feed. As we always cared for babies, we would have to get food from the government sponsored WIC program. Their goal has always been so much more than dispensing food to poor and needy “Women, Infants and Children” They are more into dispensing advice. And this would always come with a heavy amount of training in “The Food Pyramid.”
The Food Pyramid is the basic apex of the medical industry’s version of “The Science” in regard to food. The idea is, you follow the formula, and you grow. And you thrive. Of course they changed the food pyramid recently. Between the Reagan Administration calling Ketchup a vegetable to the Obama forcing inedible Whole Wheat pasta on school children, someone decided to completely revamp the Food Pyramid.
But frankly they got this one pretty much wrong as well. These are hard to follow and damn near impossible to get kids to eat. Not everyone is like my 12 year old who will polish off a container of watermelon and follow it with a bag of grapes. In fact, none of my other kids will. Corn on the cob is always a hit. And they all seem to like Green Bean Casserole.
SO
All of these official guidelines are designed for a specific purpose. And That is to help you grow and provide the proper nutrients so that you will be healthy.
But, is this really the case? We leave nutrition to uneducated parents who get their advice from Doctors who, in my estimation, are also uneducated on the subject. And how much does this affect the kids.
For Instance. You take 3 children basically in the same neighborhood from the same basic stock.
Child 1 – Feed them Breast Milk, vitamins, Organic Food, Purified water
Child 2 – Breast Milk/Formula, Basic foods and drinks
Child 3 – Formula, Kraft Mac and Cheese and tap water and soda
Will you see a difference when they get to age 10?
I ask myself this question and get a lot of questions in response to myself. Having kids stick to a specific diet is hard. It is expensive and requires a lot of planning and patience.
Then you have to wonder as you look at school aged kids. Which ones have the “better” diets? D you think the the classroom filled with honors students are all “Child 1’s.” When you visit the Average classes, are they the ones raised on Doritos and Coke?
I do have a couple thoughts on the subject. We take care of babies in our foster care experience. And have had many dealings with Neurologists. The amount of growth between birth and about the age of 4 or 5 in the brain is more than at any other time in your life. We discovered 12 year old (the one who eats all the fruit) had a brain aneurysm when he was just 1 year old. It was discovered after a brain scan when he was in an accident. In the words of his Neurosurgeon, “We don’t find them this early. This is the kind of defect that stays undetected until one day out of the blue – bang – brain hemorrhage.” A small accident saved our son’s life.
But secondary to that, the doctor noted that at his age, they would go in and dig down to the defect to fix it. Since he was so young and the brain was growing so fast, there would be virtually no after neurological affects from the surgery. The brain would heal itself.
Now I brought up this story to make a point. If you look at these “formative years” between birth and age 5, consider how important it is to make sure that these little bodies have all the nutrients needed to grow. How much brain development might be stifled in a child that does not eat right? Here is where you might start looking for which kids are in the average classes and which are in accelerated. Nature vs nurture. Is it genetics? Is it Nutrition?
What happens to a child that is exposed to bad things (heavy metals, mercury, lead paint etc.) during their formative times?
I like to go back to my own childhood and ask if my Mom was not so wrong in the way she fed us (maybe not the fluoride).
Consider also this. THE SCIENCE says that we regenerate every cell in our body every 7-10 years? What happens to your cells in that time when you let yourself go for a couple years?
Pay attention!
