The Silver Screen
Yesterday as I was putting together my thoughts on propaganda and the No Kings Rally, there was another story on my radar. But I could not then, nor now, figure out where and how it fits. Maybe you can help.
In the last 10 or so years, I have almost completely stopped paying attention to new release movies coming from the Hollywood cesspool. I remember in my distant past when my wife and I would make it a point to see all the movies up for Oscars. It added a little more drama on Academy Awards night when we felt connected to the movies up for awards.
Now I understand that the Industry has always been horribly skewed politically. But once you see it in every film that is produced and every actor in those movies, it is pretty much unbearable to watch. So I have pretty much tuned out.
Thankfully streaming services have helped produce a lot of more acceptable content. And when Hollywood lets slip something valuable, you can find it pretty quickly.
All this being said, especially in the last 10 years, I have felt less than zero desire to enter a movie theater. And just as indifferent toward following the success of these movies.
Project Hail Mary
As I said, I have tuned out to any hype in the movie industry. So, when a movie enters my radar, I have to wonder why. And for some reason, the movie Project Hail Mary is here.
And please understand, while I love science fiction, I have almost no interest in seeing this one. Reasons may become obvious shortly.
First: Last weekend was its second in theaters. And from what the media is saying, it is doing very well financially. This has been a real problem for Hollywood as so much of the trash they have produced has crashed and burned (something that makes me giggle).
Second: I do not recall absorbing any second-hand smoke about it from the 24-7 news cycle and talking head shows that pollute our living room. I like to think that is due to me finally being able to filter that shit out of my consciousness. Somehow, I doubt it though. When the morning shows want to prop up something, it is hard to completely miss.
Third: Where I noticed it. How it got on my radar. On Sunday morning, as I read posts from my 10 loyal liberal nutcases who also attended No Kings rallies, 5 of them mentioned wither going to see it or planning to see it. No one else. Just the nutz.
This, to me, is Signal. It says something that needs to be researched. If the left turning nuts are flocking to it, there must be something drawing them to it (like flies to shit?). Because to my knowledge, none of them would be considered sci fi fans. Doubtful they ever watched an episode of Star Trek, except maybe the whole season of Academy because they were told it was Blue-Check acceptable.
So, what about it? I had to do the research.
I read about 5 articles from the Hollywood Entertainment rags and other political sources (NYT, Breitbart). From these, however, I could not see a political thing about it, other than the same banal Earth in the process of being destroyed by Climate Change and a new horrible astro-disease thing. That in itself should not be a magnetic draw the leftist illiterati. I did not even get the idea that the protagonist was some eco warrior further than any other academic leftist is.
A possible hook comes from its Hollywood pedigree. The Book by the same name was written by the same writer that wrote The Martian (A sci fi blockbuster starring Mat Damon and categorized as a comedy rather than in the sci fi section – that I never saw the whole of. It was kinda dumb). Mat Damon is part of the George Clooney Leftist clique. So that may be part of it.
The Actor in Project Hail Mary is Ryan Gosseling who has starred in a lot of big budget Hollywood crap (Recently as Ken in The Barbie Movie). Now this becomes significant only because Barbie was released 2 years ago in the summer with a big promotion to see it as a double feature with the movie Oppenheimer. Why this becomes significant is that this tie in was mentioned in 3 separate articles. Now are they trying to draw attention to this fact. Trying to get morons who went to see Barbie and then were woooed into the science and marxism of Oppenheimer? Hmmm Maybe. (BTW didn’t see either of those two things either).
Fourth: This was from some Rando Tweet – and it says a lot
PROJECT HAIL MARY is a faithful adaptation of the book and as such, incredibly charming and imaginative. More than that, it continues Weir’s uncanny ability to transform hard science into palatable mass market entertainment.
I recall a story by an economist who was talking about the short-lived TV show NUMBERS about a young genius professor who helps the police solve mysteries. He comments that people like watching these kinds of shows and characters because by watching them, they feel like they are intelligent too and feel more intelligent for watching them. Not an inaccurate assessment IMHO.
So add them together: Sexpot leading man, hard science, space, Climate Change, Barbie . . .
Not seeing it. I will have to watch the movie at some point to figure that out. and IMHO that ain’t happening.
So I will keep my eyes open. And anyone who has seen it, please let me know what you know.
POSTSCRIPT on the No Kings Rallies March 2026
When the more loony of the loony left wingers go into the public, I like to offer a little advice. The things that they say are going to be divisive. They are going to be radical. The are going to be caustic. In listening to them, people on the left are going to get riled up, in support of what is being said. The people on the right are going to get riled up, as they are incensed at the foulness of their words.
My advice whenever they get up is LET THEM SPEAK!
Why?
Because they will reveal themselves. Not a week goes by without AOC saying something utterly moronic. And I just love it when it becomes part of the Congressional Record.
Anyways, there was a speech last Saturday that you must see. I have watched it 2-3 times and have the transcript below. I have it quoted from a meme on Facebook that appeared to be a Truth posted by none other than Donald Trump. I cannot verify that. But it would make this even more funny!
No Kings? Just Obey the New Bosses.
At the “No Kings” rally in St. Paul, Minnesota, emcee Lizz Winstead let the mask slip and told the crowd exactly how their so-called resistance really works.
“I want people to know that if you want to act like Minnesota, or you think Minnesota is a model, what can I do? Well, you can check your ego about what you want to do and listen to the leadership, and when they tell you what they need done, you do that. And you pay enough attention to the amazing organizers who have been on the ground, who actually have the information, who have already done the work, instead of starting your own [group]… you need to be the pack mule.”
The crowd cheered.
This is the same movement parading under the banner of fighting “authoritarianism” while demanding total submission to unelected leftist organizers. Check your ego. Shut up. Carry the gear. Don’t think for yourself. Just be the mule.
Nothing says “No Kings” like crowning a new set of commissars and ordering the foot soldiers to fall in line. The irony is thicker than Minnesota snow, but the leftists lapped it up anyway.
Minnesota isn’t a model for America. It’s a warning. And rallies like this prove the “resistance” isn’t about liberty. It’s about power, control, and turning supporters into obedient pack animals for the real bosses pulling the strings.
