Life During Wartime

This ain’t no party, this ain’t no disco
This ain’t no fooling around
No time for dancing, or lovey dovey
I ain’t got time for that now

I am not a fan of The Talking Heads. And to tell the truth, I had not given this song any time of day in my lifetime. Yes, I had heard it many times. But it was always background music that I was more trying to tune out.

And today, the only reason it has made any impression on me is the title. How many of us can really fathom what life during wartime – and in a warzone – is like. And the frightening thing is that, as I have mentioned, we are in the middle of World War Three. We are living in Life During Wartime. And very few of us are aware of it going on around us.

Start with the Song

For the purposes of this post, I looked up the song. It was written in 1979. It described life in inner cities at that time. And if you recall 1979: Bad Recession, Gas Lines, Hostages taken in Iran, Crime was frightening. Think about it. I was only about 12 and I bought a roll of Ayatollah Toilet paper for the fun of it.

But that was as close to it as I ever was. I lived in a safe suburb. Far away from race riots or inner cities where gunfire was common. Gangland killings in LA were at least 20 miles from us. We did not have the Mob like in Chicago and New York and Philli.

As the lyrics of the song say:

Heard of a van that is loaded with weapons
Packed up and ready to go
Heard of some grave sites out by the highway
A place where nobody knows

The sound of gunfire off in the distance
I’m getting used to it now
Lived in a brownstone, lived in a ghetto
I’ve lived all over this town

The Front and the Homefront

It’s 47 years later. Still fighting Iran. Gas prices are an issue. And, despite the lack of a formal declaration, the world is at war. This latest fight with Iran is but one front. We also have The Ukraine, Gaza, India and Pakistan threatening Nukes, Venezuela and more than a few others.

I fear that one of the highlights of these latest fights is how the aim is going to the top leadership. Assad claims to have sought protection in Russia. Call it what you like. Maduro is in prison in New York. More and more of the Irani ruling class is being blown to bits. Are we used to seeing these types of targets?

With the Kinetic war in Iran, the fear of full-scale terror attacks becomes all to possible a thing. I was just reading that at present there are 7 Executive Level Cabinet Members who have taken up residence on military bases:

  • Pete Hegseth: Secretary of Defense.
  • Marco Rubio: Secretary of State.
  • Kristi Noem: Homeland Security Secretary.
  • Stephen Miller: White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy
  • Daniel P. Driscoll: Army Secretary.
  • John Feling: Navy Secretary.
  • Pam Bondi: Attorney General.
  • And do not forget that Joe Kent just resigned. Claims it is due to disagreeing with war in Iran. You make the call.

Some of these are definitely as a result homeland fears. My own experience with people suffering from TDS shows how possible that can be. And remember also, The President was attacked 2 times during the last election cycle and two others were caught in the act, one of whom just happened 3 weeks ago.

In typical National Security fashion, we of course know nothing about these. But I would hazard a guess that credible threats are happening here on our soil right now.

How Does This Relate to St. Patrick?

Well, it doesn’t really. But it does segue into life in Northern Ireland during the 70’s and 80’s. Life there was wartime. And for most people outside the conflict, we were scratching our heads for the reason why they were all so angry with each other. Frankly, from the American perspective (mine at east), there wasn’t much difference between British and Irish.

But the old feuds between them were serious enough to escalate from fist fights to riots, to gunfights to bombings. And neither side was willing to back down an inch.

We think of St Patrick as the happy guy dressed like the pope who drove the snakes out of Ireland. It has become an excuse for the whole world to celebrate Ireland and drink Irish Whiskey and green beer. Shamrocks and Leprechauns are cute reminders of the Emerald Isle.

But the holiday means a hell of a lot more than that. Celebrating the holiday began about 1000 years ago. Oddly this would have been about 400 or so years after St Patrick died. While it began as a more religious affair, it has morphed into the party it is today. Much of the hype due to America, and its large Irish immigrant population.

Much of the animosity between the British and Irish has cooled off. Britian declared independence from the EU and Ireland became its vassal state. And much of its religious tradition is being erased (as all good Socialist states do). We will have to see what role they will play in the next phase of 5th generation war.

For me, I like to remember to old Irish Blessing. It really did not mean much to me until my daughter began singing it with one of the singing groups she was involved in. So, until we meet again . . .
