Something Good
I have been inspired by the Tolkien quote I used for Happy Monday this week.
“It’s like the great stories, Mr. Frodo, the ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn’t want to know the end because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad has happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing this shadow, even darkness must pass. A new day will come, and when the sun shines, it’ll shine out the clearer. I know now folks in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going because they were holding on to something. That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it’s worth fighting for.”

It is probably more famous for how it was used in the movie version. Frankly they messed that up. The book scene remains one of my favorites. And since I have read Lord of the Rings 16 times (the last time earlier this spring), it is one I cherish and look forward to.
I think Tolkien transcended himself from the story when he wrote it. Like writing to the world as a whole instead of just to the story in the book. The message is universal. It is the Heros Journey in single paragraph.
My feelings about the Lord of the Rings movies are very mixed.
For the positive, they painted a VERY good and VERY realistic picture of what we could only imagine from the books. Things like Helm’s Deep, Isengard and Minas Tirith. I had a picture in my mind’s eye of what they looked like. But could never fully realize it until I saw it on the big screen. Those were aha moments for me.
And the musical score matched the story to perfection. Was I the only person in the theater who almost stood up to clap when Breath of Life featuring Sheila Chandra played through the bizarre battle that left Aragorn wounded (a pointless and unnecessary plot deviation added to the movies). Probably.
The negatives are too numerous to count. But omitting Bombadill and the Scouring of the Shire were the most unforgivable. They both set up key aspects of The Heroes Journey.
Why We Fight
Which brings us back to the Good in the world. Because our reality is looking a whole lot more like another famous Novel written at about the same time. By another famous author. That being 1984 by George Orwell. Unfortunately not a heroes journal. More like a horror-tragedy.
And we are living it. We are seeing the wars, the Big Brothers, the propaganda. And for better or for worse seeing the helplessness of We the People vs They the Deep State.
How far will they try to go? How far will we allow them to get?
It is here where we ask ourselves if we will draw a line in the sand. If there is a point you will scream that it has to stop. Where you will fight.
I reached that point years ago with my levels of disgust. But do not always know where to draw the battle lines. Its not enough to say it is wrong. More must be done.
Astrogardens is one of my battle lines. It is a place where I can bring up the things I see and spread the word. And hopefully people see it. My message and the message I am trying to illuminate. And just maybe want to do something about it. Become your own little hero on whatever journey you choose to be on.
