Happy Monday! Happiness is a gift and the trick is not to expect it, but to delight in it when it comes. ~Dickens

And Happy Janmashtami to all! For all you westerners, this is a Hindu Holiday celebrating the birth of Krishna. I think its important to pay attention to these observances. Not just as a way of honoring and understanding practicing Hinduism. The population of India is 1.366 Billion and google estimates and 79.8% of them practice Hinduism, means that approximately 14% of the population of the Earth recognized this holiday. It is one of those many religious holidays that floats around the calendar (think like Easter not ever being on the same day each year – note to Christians. This is due to lunar phases.).

So what is the celebration all about? Per wikipedia:

It is an important festival, particularly in the Vaishnavism tradition of Hinduism. Dance-drama enactments of the life of Krishna according to the Bhagavata Purana (such as Rasa lila or Krishna Lila), devotional singing through the midnight when Krishna was born, fasting (upavasa), a night vigil (Ratri Jagaran), and a festival (Mahotsav) on the following day are a part of the Janmashtami celebrations.

So. Traditions celebrated and people eat together. Where I think its important is that whenever large groups of people get together, their collective energy affects us all. How it affects us? I do not know. But it’s best to pay attention. And I thank all my friends on Facebook who happen to be in India for letting me know.

Happy Monday! Your Monday morning thoughts set your tone for the whole week. I’ll start you off with a few. Strong. Happy. Healthy. Now you write the rest. Have an Amazing week!

Earlier this summer I began talking at length about the need to prepare for when The Shit Hits the Fan and the world falls apart. Kind of a heavy subject. But one that if you have not spent any time thinking about will find you . . . well unprepared.

One piece of advice that is important is to have a “Go Bag” ready with things that you will need in case of a bug out.

Now I am not going into all the things you will need to pack. But it did get me thinking about the kinds of useful tools you might need. One of those tools that i personally wanted was a good compass. So I went to Amazon to buy one. There were a number of decent looking compasses in the $10-20 range. And then I found something even more fun.

KOSIN Survival Gear and Equipment,18 in 1 Emergency Survival Kit

All the neat things are shown here to the right. And at the time, it was priced at $39, but marked down to $12. So WTF. I was about to drop $15 for just a compass. With this kit it’s a compass and so much more! So I bought it.

Here is the list of stuff in the kit.

Compass, Survival knife, Wire saw, Water Bottle Clip, Emergency Blanket, Flintstone, Scraper, Flashlight, Credit Card Knife, Pen, Whistle, Mini Light, Carabiner, paracord bracelet, band aid, alcohol wipes, gauze and Black Waterproof Box.

Now truly, if I was looking for perfect, this is not it. The items are small. And I am afraid a lot will get lost (especially if my sons get their hands on it).

But if nothing else, they point out a lot about the little things in life that we have at home that we forget about. Anyone who travels much thinks about it. Little things like a sewing kit, nail clippers, nose hair clippers, band aids. Finding yourself without them offers the chance to be incredibly inconvenienced, unhappy and uncomfortable. (This kit does not have those so I will keep looking)

But then consider being in an emergency with no way to run for the junk drawer or out to Walgreens to pick something up. So getting a box like this is a pretty good idea.

I plan to talk about a lot of these little pieces, just because some of them really are pretty cool. And as I said, just having it around has made my sons extremely curious. I will start with and easy one.

FLASHLIGHT

Flashlights are one of those things that we all know we should have around. It’s a great junk drawer item. They are incredibly useful when needed – like when the lights go out.

I find 2 problems with having flashlights around the house. 1) They are an irresistible toy for kids. What kid can’t find a reason to swipe the flashlight. Running around outside, searching a closet, exploring under the house. Part of the importance of having a flashlight is being able to find it if you need it.  2) Sitting in the junk drawer, out of sight and out of mind, how often to the batteries go dead?

These are 2 scenarios why I do not have any working flashlights in the house. The funny thing is that since I got this one, I can’t tell you how many times I have used it to run outside in the dark. And for me, its the same reason each time. I have to go out to the side yard to snip mint for making iced tea. I drink a gallon of it every other day. And frankly, the one in this kit works about a thousand times better than the one on my cell phone. And its a lot easier to hold too.

Now that’s enough of a commercial. Its a cute little thing that has come in handy. Now you should consider what kind of flashlight you really need. And even more, if there is any other portable lighting you may need. If things go to hell, we have light on average half of the day.

Now, exactly what you have in entirely up to you. The last 10 years or so have our family a little bit better prepared for it. We have had 2 instances where we had power outages for a day or more. We used to be candle freaks and had (and still have) lots of pillar and taper candles down in the basement. That being said, when the outages happened aftr dark, I had to do that crazy walk in the dark down to the candle cupboard due to the fact that none of our flashlights either could be found or had batteries. Always within about 10 minutes we had light again. But despite the familiarity of our house, its still a bit creepy.

Since then, we purchased a number of batter operated lights. We also had it better than some of our neighbors. We have natural gas. So when the power went out in the winter, we had our gas fireplace insert to heat our house. We had more than a few neighbors heading for hotels to ride it out.

And Batteries. Here is where having a house full of kids works both with and against us. Batteries are like toys here. And it is a rare day when the batteries die that we have replacements. That being said, with kids who have a hundred little toys with batteries, we always can steal from the toys to power the lights.

Consider for yourself what kind of batteries you will need. And have a good place to store them that is easy for you to scoop into your “go bag” in case of emergency.

Happy Monday! Happiness is the path. ~Buddha

My quote for this second Monday in May illustrates a point about positivity and the Law of Attraction. Under the Law of Attraction, like attracts like. I often see in positive words and statements, what may look like a positive statement often times is not. Think this through:

The complete Quote attributed to The Buddha is

“There is no path to happiness. Happiness is the path.”

It begins as a negative statement and then turns toward the positive. I find the problem with this technique is that is focuses first on the negative. And by focusing on it, by drawing attention to it, brings that negative into the world or into the space we are inhabiting.

Now many faiths work with that positive and negative pull. Good vs evil. Yin vs Yang. It is the pull of two separate forces against each other. We like to think that good wins. But the opposites are not always good and bad. There is Hot vs Cold. Neither  can be classified as good or bad. Just opposite.

So the point of my mission, especially with positive affirmations every Monday, is to focus solely on the positive. When we start there, and move forward, we work toward more positive and life looks better and brighter.

On Another Note

A few weeks ago, I talked on the quote:

When the Student is Ready, the teacher will appear.

I have seen it attributed to both The Buddha and Sun Tzu, so it must have just been something someone put in a fortune cookie 200 years ago and it went viral.

But what I saw today in an article from my friend Lance Schuttler tells me that this has happened again. I have been writing about music that people should listen to while sleeping. And lo and behold  an article appears that tells about this succinctly. I hope you will all take a look at it.

Happy Monday! Make a list of things that make you happy and then plan your day accordingly. Have a great week!

What things make you happy?

It’s a question for the ages. And how many of those things are we doing throughout the day. vs How many things are we doing throughout the day that we do not like.

I see this as an important lesson for people to do. Consider the things you like and write them down. Writing them down is important.

It is like bringing them to life.

I like a good cup of coffee. For me that is easy. I go to my coffee pot and pour a cup. No going to Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks. Just straight out of the machine. Strong, Black, Hot. I can see the pot out in the kitchen from where I sit. Easy enough to go out and pour some more. In this I am lucky. I like the coffee that I brew better than anything else. Saves me a hell of a lot of money vs. buying it from some bougie coffee shop.

This is what I like.

What about you? Do you have your perfect cup of coffee? Can you imagine it? Where you get it. what you put in it. How it smells and tastes. Is getting that cup of coffee an experience? What about the experience do you enjoy?

Life is filled with seemingly simple decisions that have so much more complexity than we think about.

The Point

But the point of this exercise is to begin to focus on things that you like. And see what we can do to bring more of it into our lives.

If you are lucky then you enjoy your job. They say if you are doing what you love then you never “work” a day in your life. I have been lucky that when i have had “jobs” that they have been doing things that I like. I had one job that I seriously did not like. I needed a job and it presented itself. But it was drudgery every day for the six months I worked at it. Leaving work was like being released from prison. And after having experienced it, I will not repeat it ever.

I bring up work because it is often what we do most often. Unless you are independently wealthy, the money has to come from somewhere. So the idea is to find a job where you are making money doing what you like.

I had another job that I worked at for 7 years. I loved what I was doing. But I could not stand the people i was doing it for. I could go into work, stay in my office and do all I had to do and interact with my bosses as little as possible. It was a trade off. I truly enjoyed what I did. The money was good.

Eventually it ended, and that was a good thing. I found a better job – also doing work I loved. I have been lucky in that regard.

So Back to the List.

Try it today. List things you like. Put them in categories. Consider what parts of your life they may have an effect on.

Is your life entirely made up of the things you like? Probably not. But can you maximize the good things and minimize the bad?

We can hope.
