AI Was just a Horror Movie Until . . .
We have been debating the idea of Artificial Intelligence taking over society as long as I have been alive. It is a beloved genre among Conspiracy and Sci Fi types. The Sci Fi biggies like Isaac Asimov, Arthur C Clark and Phillip K Dick used the Man vs Technology conflict to perfection.
Movies like 2001 Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, I Robot, The Terminator, Minority Report, Ex Machina, to name a few, offer in all the horror the basic scenario. What if the Artificial Intelligence technology we build becomes smarter or stronger than we are? Will they take over? What might they do?
Well it is 2025. AI’s realistic development began in earnest in the last 2000’s. Each year it has progressed exponentially. In 2025, 5 of the top 30 companies on the Dow Jones Industrial Average are directly involved in AI development (the top 3 among those 5). Every country outside the US is investing in AI technology as it is a race to develop it first.
And despite all the hype and the interest, not enough people are heeding the warnings and worrying about the potential catastrophe of developing a sentient technology that has exponentially higher intelligence than we possess.
Yesterday I came across this 15 minute clip from an interview between Joe Rogan and Dr. Roman Yampolskiy. Who is he, you might ask? He is an AI security scientist. What that is and how he makes money is unclear to me.
But it was 15 minutes enough to scare me almost as much as when I saw Blade Runner the first time and terrify me as much as remembering HAL speaking.
